Hiya all...

We recently completed our first paid gig - a music video for a new upcoming NZ artist Mo'Reece .

The music video was shot over a 6 hour period over a friday night. The location was Britomart, the central train station in Auckland, New Zealand. Lance, the DOP shot the video on his Panasonic DVX100a. Really simple concept with the brief to raise up the artist profile.

I think I have babbled enough..The link to the music videos are below:

Lo-Resolution {18MB} : http://amit.unkreative.com/film-lonely.html
Hi-Resolution {36 MB} : http://amit.unkreative.com/film-lonely-hi.html

Would love to hear what you think.

Cheers

Hi,

There is some nice shots in there.

If I may:

1. The vocalists singing looks a bit "unatural", if he could perhaps look more convincing that is him singing at that moment in time,

2. some of the extra's movements looks very "rehearsed".

Look I'm by no way a pro, these comments are ment to be positive critisism, and hope you see it that way.

I'm just saying what I experience when I watch the video.

Thanks,
Derrick

Hey
I really liked the main shot where he is singing and its yellow. There was one shot where he was near a wall, and the coloring was way different, something was wierd about that one. About 1/3 into it. I agree that the singer could have put more into it. Good stuff overall though.

Nice !

I like the scenery, cool....
I didn't liked some shadows, mainly when people cross in front of vocalist.
He should put more energy / expression on singing, but it is not your fault at all.
You should color correct some scenes to maintain unity in skin tones.
Again, nice job.... I liked many angles / movements.

Congratulations,
Ulisses

I didn't like the picture in the beginning...If you really wanted it there I'd try to think of a different way to present it(like on a dresser or hanging up or something). I did however like the opening shot right after the picture. The shot with the escalators was also really cool. You made a really good attempt at this, and if you worked on the flow of the piece as a whole I think it could be much better.

Great job with the editing. My only thoughts were exactly what Derrick said. The guy looked sort of timid and nervious. Also, some of the people in the background (and walking by) looked sort of stage. I really enjoyed the different angles and cuts you had and the overall location was pretty nice.

Well done. Its a great feeling when you get that first paying gig in the can. The most important question would be did the client like it? Was it a good experience for everyone involved? If so, you can't do much better than that.

It was not a very imaganitive song or video concept, however, both the song and the video were well executed and produced. I agree with the earlier comment regarding the oping picture. My first impression was that this was going to be a "home" video production. But I was pleasantly surprised with the rest of it.

So if your concerned about first impressions you might consider changing it, on the other hand you went from an underwhelming opening to over delivering a good video by the end. Most music videos are the other way around, they start with a bang and the viewer has long since checked out by the end.

Congratulation and keep up the good work. :engel017:

Great. Very minimalist.

I liked the bench shots the most (where he's wearing a green shirt). IMO the focus shifts sometimes didn't work that well (long passage way). I liked your pace, and the editing, for the most part, complimented it.

The song had a kind of "Maxwell" feel to it, so I was expecting a lady or two, but that is just my preconceptions. Overall it has a nice feel to it so your client should be happy.

O/T - Congratulations on your pick and paragraph in MovieMaker Magazine. Nice to see you get some press. I look forward to seeing "Memories of Tomorrow":).

thanks a lot for watching the video and for commenting on it... without trying to sound as if i am making excuses let me try and answer some of the criticsms {overall i do really appreciate the comments and have made it a point to improve on those when we do our next video}

1. The vocalists singing looks a bit "unatural", if he could perhaps look more convincing that is him singing at that moment in time,

I would totally agree on that - the artist would not put the kind of energy I wanted him to - several factors contributing to it might be friends and family who were around and me not pushing the singer hard enough - maybe next time i will make myself more clear. Point noted and taken...

2. some of the extra's movements looks very "rehearsed".

Again - we never knew how many extras we were gonna get as it was supposed to be the record label arranging for those, so we ended up using whomever we could get our hands on - including pushing our lighting guys into the shot :-) ...maybe next time if we get a bigger budget to actually get extras - we might not run into that problem....

3. You should color correct some scenes to maintain unity in skin tones

The video is colour corrected and i deliberately changed the colour tempratures in different setups to make it look different -otherwise there was no colour variation to keep the viewer interested. it works for some and doesn't for others...so it is a bit of a 'iffy' one...

4. Its a great feeling when you get that first paying gig in the can. The most important question would be did the client like it? Was it a good experience for everyone involved? If so, you can't do much better than that.

It is a fantastic feeling getting paid for something that one love's so much to do...the client loves it - because it exceeded their expectations on the overall look and feel of the video and met the brief they gave to us.... It was a really fun experience for everyone invloved..had heaps of fun and was a really cruisy shoot.

5. It was not a very imaganitive song or video concept, however, both the song and the video were well executed and produced. I agree with the earlier comment regarding the oping picture. My first impression was that this was going to be a "home" video production. But I was pleasantly surprised with the rest of it.

I agree - it was not very imaginative or unique...that was because of the artist's insistence on keeping it as simple as it could be, so our hands were literally tied and we had to work within our restrictions. It was hard work creating and maintaining the tempo and interest but full credit to Phil - the editor of the piece.

Overall - i am pleased because we did this with a really miniscule budget and pulled this off to the client's expectation. :-) But criticism noted for the next video.

D&G - cool - thanks for lettting me know about the moviemaker article..i gave the interview to Moviemaker magazine a while back and wasnt sure if we will get included in but looks like we are...am off to the bookstore to get a copy of the magazine. 'Memories' will be getting an October DVD release in both US as well as NZ - so am thrilled...you can check out the updates at http://www.unkreative.com

well, everythign i didn't like was mentioned already so besides the small list of negative i overall liked it. my favs were the bench shots and the side profile shots. didn't like the yellowish shots with the large white collar shirt

Dissolving from the picture to the opening shot didn't work for me. Try cutting so it dissolves into that shot a bit later, so the movement of the camera is already happening so to speak.

I wish I could view this but I guess I don't have the correct quicktime thing, I've been trying to update it for ever but it never will do! :-(
(If anyone wants to help me, that would be GREAT!)
Sorry man.

Cheers,
Eric

sorry dude..not an option - client has approved the video and the first rule of paid work is don't mess with a cut which has been approved by someone who pays for it.... :-D

Hi there,

I forgot to mention in my 1st post here that the video was well edited.

thanks for taking the comments positively, let me repeat myself, I am not a pro.

I use this forum to learn more from the pro's in this forum, because these people are brutaly honest (in a nice way) you can always learn to become better if you take the comments, what ever they may be, and learn something out of it for the next project.

And besides it's great to share work one has done.

Thanks,
Derrick
