New-ish Mac Mini

Mark Harris

Pain in the ass
Anyone have one? Pretty good for like photoshop, etc? Pretty good machines for normal use? Not video editing, but photoshop is a must...are they about as powerful as a laptop?

I bought my last mac mini about 2 to 2 and a half years ago. I changed the RAM to 3GB (max it could hold). I've used it for my video editing / photoshop / etc until about a month ago when the render times just about killed me. It was good for about that long, running Final Cut Studio 2, After Effects, Photoshop, etc. Though after about a year or so, I really could only run one at a time. I'm about to buy a big-boy tower because buying a new mini every two years or so isn't working out for me.

I'm using the mini that was out just before the latest version. Been using it for video editing and it works just fine, even 1920x1080 pro res footage it handles really well. It chokes a little playing 1920x1080 HD full screen on a second monitor in final cut, but just barely. Oddly, I don't get that same issue when using Avid Media Composer. I imagine the newer version with the more powerful graphics card could handle it perfectly. . I have 3GB of ram, and swapping out the ram in this version was a nightmare something akin to defusing a live bomb. The newest version has an access door for ram which would make life easier as well. The one thing I love is that it's dead silent. The fans don't kick in even for intensive rendering.
