New iPod Nano shoots video

What's the rung just below game-changer? Flip cameras were the game changer, IMO. What this new iPod Nano does is harness that idea and streamline it in a new and better way.

This does fall a little short from Flip, though, since video from the Nano is only 640x480 and Flip now has an HD version.

yes but its much smaller than the flip mino and does so much more for the same price(compared to the flip SD version). i think its pretty cool. will probably pick one up to replace my mino and my 3rd gen nano. not sure if i like where they placed the camera though.

At any rate, it is interesting. And as Matt has proven, this thing buries the SD Flip. I bought my wife one and the this Nano would be a much cooler thing to carry around. Plus FM radio!

Same price with twice the capacity and a lot smaller form factor (to say nothing of the iPod features.)

Yeah I don't like the camera placement either but understand why it had to be there to keep the device thin (as opposed to behind the screen.)

I don't think people will buy a Nano for the video camera alone. If I want to shoot video and am dropping ~$150 then I am getting a Flip or the new Kodak candy bar camera. What Apple did do is place a very usable video camera in the best selling iPod of all time, and by extension into the hands of millions. The camera might not be a game changer, but how people use it will be.

I will probably buy one for the video camera alone. I feel its better than what my Flip Mino can do from some of the samples i have seen so far. Audio seems better too and its at least half the thickness of even the mino. Plus i can keep some of my favorite albums on it also :)

The quality of the Nano seems to be comparable to the flip in a much smaller form factor...also from the sample's I've seen the sound quality is surprisingly good (at a distance.)

How long till Zacuto comes out with a $500 kit for it?

I think that the Nano is another sign of the changes we are going threough. Soon everything will be all video, all of the time or it sure does seem to be heading that way.

I bought one on the weekend ( I wanted a new iPod ), and I have to say that it's a pretty good little video camera for what it is.

The only drag at the moment is that I haven't figured out how to download the .h264 files it shoots to my computer...

I bought one and got it today. It's really sweet... pretty much bought it for exercising and being able to switch to radio when my music got old. Tested the video for a sec and it's basically the same as my Blackberry.

I think it is like when phones started having cameras. How many people take serious photos with their phones? Camera phones haven't killed still cameras, and a video camera in an ipod won't seriously hurt video cameras.

When you want to snap a quick photo/video of something in front of you, you can w/ a device you were already used to carrying around with you. But when you go to your kid's first soccer game, you'll take out that "BIG" camera, you know that thing the size of a pop can that doesn't have any mp3s on it, whats-it-called... or right, camcorder.

I don't think we've insinuated that this will kill big cameras in any way.

The Flip started a revolution... compact, inexpensive cameras that produce results that are, quite honestly, stunning for the money... and they shoot specifically for Internet upload. These little cameras have changed what people can do in many artistic ways, and have impacted vlogging and other types of video media. So of course we pull out the "big guns" when image quality absolutely counts, but these little cameras have their place.

What the iPod Nano with the built-in video camera does is take what the Flip has done and wraps it up into a fascinating package that includes personal media player.

I love device convergence, even redundancy! Bring it on!!!! In an ideal world, every device is video, wireless comm, and PDA capable. Why not? What gets hurt (not killed) is obsolete CORE technology. Super 8, 8mm, high 8, analog phones, wired phones, Betamax, VHS,Analog Tube TV, and Dinosauras. Eventually, much of it will converge into a single device that may also have a Peronal Personelle Extinguisher in it- Ala Blade Runner ;)
The video nano is temporary until Apple de-couples from ATT. Then the "as cheap as last year's nano" iPhone will indeed kill a lot of nano lust, and a number of iphone competitors in the process.

game changer? Its not professional film makers game ,never will be and never was so they can play this game to the death.

I think that that the term "filmmaker" is morphing though. Professionals will always be the ones making a living doing it but video is the lingua fraca of the current and next generations. It used to be you had to be technical and clever to create video. Now, anyone can do it and the end results are getting more and more watchable, if not high quality, as people get more clued in on what makes video digestable as a communication form.
