New iPhone 5S shoots 120fps

You are a bad person. Go to your room and think about what you've done. :embarasse

...ok, seriously now, there really isn't any situation that benefits from vertical video since all the playback mediums are still horizontal. If you shoot it vertical, you're still going to either crop it or reframe it and lose 2/3 of your image and resolution!

:)

Like I said. It's bad but sometimes might be the only solution to get your subject in to the frame.
Now for that people in those situations... i think they don't give a **** about losing some resolution..and that's all I have to say about it :)

I think that higher frame rates might just be a big thing 'cause those cheap GoPro's are spreading like fire. When consumers get their hands on good or even average slowmo they are going to want more.

I remember some people predicting the demise of professional cameras and today we probably have more pro camera options than ever before and Flip is dead.

But wasn't Flip killed off not because it wasn't profitable, but because it's parent company just didn't want to deal with it?

Vertical video has some uses, like if you know your display is going to be mounted vertically in a lobby. Then by all means, shoot everything vertical. Heck, Spiderbrace even has a mount to help out with vertical video. Otherwise, vertical video is the devil.

If anyone tries saying their iPhone is better than a C100, just hand them two XLR cables & a pair of headphones. Then ask them to plug them into the phone.

From an article "liked" on Facebook by Jarred himself:

Lost amid the semi-frenzy over Apple’s new iPhone models was a provocative photography-related comment made by Apple Senior VP of Marketing, Phil Schiller, during Tuesday’s announcement.
Schiller said, and we quote (thanks to Jeffrey Friedl for the catch):

It used to be the way you take better pictures is you learn to be a better photographer. You get bigger cameras, bigger lenses, you learn about all the techniques of light meters and gels and filters, and you can spend your lifetime learning how to take advantage of this and make it work for you.

For the people who want do that, that’s great. For most of us, we just want to take a picture, and have the iPhone take a better picture for us.

That's just not what we do here.

Slomo is nice and all, but can we get people to stop shooting vertical video?
You know what would make for an amazing feature on iPhone 6? A rotating sensor! There's a tiny motor that automatically aligns the sensor to the horizontal plane, but you can still intentionally lock it's position (along with the screen) using the rotation lock switch. It would take some clever engineering to pull something like that, but I bet Apple could do it, seeing as they stuffed a fingerprint sensor into the home button.

When I say "motor" I mean it in an abstract way, since it could be a ring motor like what Canon uses in their lenses (potential to be extremely tiny, since it's just two flat planes)

Even a cheaper/easier idea: no rotating sensor but just force auto-rotate in video mode and crop the sensor. Most people don't care about the loss of resolution. At the very least it would end the plague of vertical video. Then we can work on that rotating sensor.

Actually, am I stupid or what... Just make a square sensor. The sensor in most small-sensor cams is already 4:3 aspect ratio and cropped on capture, just stretch it out a bit and voilà. Digital rotation/auto horizon leveling.

They could do that digitally with a square sensor today. No need for motors. A square sensor would also have an option for shooting square for Instagram!

LOL, heck no, you are that bad person because you dont even think! :P

If you dont know it, pros regulary use verital videos. If you need perfect key of just one figure on green background its allways better to do it with double horizontal resolution then just regular one. In some commercial with Tiger Woods they turned RED camera to achieve 4K resolution horisontaly just for the maximus quality. You can zoom more in post when you have 4K tall figure in HD video ;). Artist in post will love it. Its smart stuff.

There can be lot of horizontal video in shops, displays, music or fashion shows, theaters, videomapping, corporate sphere, expos, political rallies, outdoor advertising, bus stops, shoping centers, big horizontal jumbotrons etc. etc. ... I've lot of screens turned horizontal even better monitor has pivot stand ;)

Dude, we're talking about people using their phones to make YouTube videos here. There's a rationale for breaking every rule or correct procedure in the right circumstance, but these limited number of situations have nothing to do with the people who shoot vertical videos on their phones and think that's ok.
There's maybe, maybe 1 justified use per million idiotic vertical videos.

I think there is almost no chance to change it. Its just natural to them to shoot horizontal. They just dont care :)

On Thursday I was handed some footage to cut together. A few clips from a GoPro3 and two from an iPhone. The iPhone footage is vertical. Worse still it's an iPhone 4 so it's only 720p.

Ah, the DP was a genius! They were shooting for all that extra horizontal resolution like all the good pros do!
