Hey HHL,

You scared me. I had to double check my order... I did snag the HX9V. It was out of stock yesterday. I kept checking back and it appeared in stock for about 20 minutes or so. That's why I jumped on it.

Keep checking back; it might reappear soon.

DANG! Will do...I had been checking throughout the day....I'll keep checking. Thanks for the tip! (Maybe I can get it sooner) :) Cheers Buddy! You'll have to share some tips and footy!

60p around 24mp isnt that bad for the price point. Sure, it will never be Main cam.. but its an excellent cam to have for "projects".
Heck, im quite happy with the 1080 i60/720p of my GH2 at 17Mbits... so 24 at 60p is pretty darn interesting.

The difference between VHS and DVD was huge, The difference between DVD and Blu-Ray, not so much. I've never had a client demand that a project be mastered to Blu-Ray, so I've never made one.
That being said, my DVD volume is way down. I do a fair amount of simple 1-offs for law enforcement clients, since their media has to be in a 'fixed' format before it can go into court. But for regular clients....my DVD duper only gets turned on a few times a year now. We're thinking that -one way or another- data rates will go up and most everything will go online. We have no idea how it will work, but that's where we are focusing our attention. Interesting times ahead...

I had a client request a Blu-Ray the other day. The show was only 20 min long so i told them I could burn the HD video to a regular DVD and a Blu-Ray player could play it in HD.
Oh no - they wanted an actual Blu-Ray disc.....grrrrr - I finally got Blu-Ray burner and a few discs - using Toast with a MAC I can produce a Blu-Ray disc...
But your 24p content has to have pull-down added or it looks funky. I use After Effects to add pull down and it looks great.

Here's my first test footage on my HX9v, and I had a Canon 600D along for the ride. As you can see resolution soundly beats the 600D and at wide angle detail is better resolved with less moire and aliasing. It's still there but it's better than on a DSLR. I would never 'replace' my DSLR with a compact because they are very different beasts but if you need a compact that does usable video which you can insert into a DSLR shot project without it looking totally out of the place, the HX9v is a great choice. Also check out the IXUS 220, that has 1080/24p. The HX9 is better specced though, especially the lens. I find the ultra-small compacts get very soft in the corners very quickly.

The HX9 shines for handheld stuff and run & gun where it's handy to have 24-385 in one package without having to swap primes. AF tracking also works well for that kind of situation. If I were someone like Dan Chung I'd have it in my handbag at all times :)

Just a heads up, they are in stock at Amazon (sold through Electronics Expo). Just ordered mine. Do these take SD cards? And approximately how long does the battery last when shooting video?

@Andrew Reid
I'd like to see a comparison against the GH2 since bit rate and container are similar. But thanks for that insight.

My dream compact would have the fast lens of the Olympus XZ1, the fully articulated screen of the Samsung TL500, and the video capabilities of this Sony.

It's close to the GH2 in terms of resolution. Slightly behind.

Definitely behind in terms of dynamic range.

I have both and they compliment each other for different reasons.

As far as compacts go, no other holds a candle to the HX9v in terms of the broad featureset and image quality in video mode.

Also you can use it with the Zacuto Z-Finder in a mini-Super-8-style rig. The screen is 920k so works well when magnified. http://www.eoshd.com/content/2754/sony-hx9v-initial-thoughts

Sony specified the best 1080/60p records at 28Mbps (24Mpbs is for 1080i). LINK HERE

The HX100V arrives here tomorrow, and it should be interesting to see how it handles on proper supports in manual mode (as opposed to all the handheld/auto consumer footage on YouTube).

Relative to stills -- 800mm equivalent (optical, not digital) at 16 megapixels evokes the interest of even a cynical anti-sony guy like me. A Canon/Nikon pro equivalent setup would not only cost a small fortune, but I couldn't lift it with two fingers or carry it in a large pocket.

I received mine today. Haven't had a chance to open it yet, but I'm going to try to shoot some test footage tomorrow.
