New HVX-200 User, Got Couple Questions

I just got this baby yesterday with 2x16gb p2 card. So far, I'm impressed with the overall quality. Got a couple projects reserved for me already, can't wait to play with it.

Can this camera record to P2 and tape at the same time (I searched the manual but couldn't find it)?

Is there a way to get the P2 remaining time/space on the display?

When the camera is switched off and you tilt the front and back, sounds like there is something lose inside the lens part, is this normal? but nothing is moving when the camera is on.

Do you always have to switch the camera off before ejecting the tape?

and I'm not sure if I have the setting wrong, it's just like that but everytime I switch between recording to P2 and to Tape, I have to switch the camera off and on. I find this a little bit annoying.

Sorry for the dumb questions.

Thanks.

Hi.

No, it cannot record to p2 and tape at the same time. You can dub down to tape and convert to mini dv in camera, but it's not of the best quality and recommended that you do that via your NLE instead.

The p2 remaining time/space should be there in the top right corner of the lcd, right next to the battery icon. The minutes is actually your record time, not the minutes left on your battery :)

The famous clunk :) It's the OIS (Optical Image Stabilizer). It is normal, and silent when the camera is on (as you noted).

I've never used tape with the HVX :)

I think so on this last one, but don't remember as I've never used tape with the HVX... Most people don't switch back and forth regularly so it's not really an issue for practical shooting. You are either using p2, or mini dv... not both at the same time. If you want both, I would recommend shooting to p2 whatever format you want, and then edit your project in that format in your NLE. Then output whatever your final format(s) will be. Be it MiniDV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50, or HD.

Hope that helps.

Get Barry's book. It'll help shorten your learning curve with the camera immensely.

Question #1 - No

Question #2 - As long as you have it turned on, P2 remaining time reads out in upper right of display.

Question #3 - Normal, it's the image stabilizer and you have asked the most common newbie question known to man ;-)

Question #4 - No, you can eject tape anytime on or off.

Question #5 - Sorry, that's the way it is, nothing you can do to change that.

Read the manual, these are mostly answered there.

Recording to tape with the HVX200 is a lot like using it as a paperweight -- it can be done, but it's a waste of the camera. ;)
