New Horror\Thriller Feature "The Complex&quot

I've updated my site a little and added some footage for all to view. Low quality because I don't have space to host more. (only free 10mb account, web space coming soon). Anyway the footage is a rough cut of a couple of scenes and then a montage of a lot of scenes. Sound has not been touched (needs extensive work!) Music is just for fun (we have a composer working on some real music.) 24pa with the anamorphic lens, just something to give people an idea of the movie. enjoy

If it were shot with the anamorphic lens how come it looks like 4:3? You might want to "re-stretch" it before upload or it might just be me.

Looks like a good start, although the music seems a bit too upbeat, but the lighting is all very nice. The camera moves are pretty amazing, too. How did you pull those off? They looked like they'd need real dolly tracks, or something else fancier than what I've worked with.

Re: New Horror\Thriller Feature "The Complex&

The trailer seems more like a large scene...i think the cuts need to be faster and what did you use for the audio - didn't really sound to good, kind of echoed...could be web compression??? Other wise the lighting was good and the talent seemed pretty talented...:) Nice camera moves too!

Re: New Horror\Thriller Feature "The Complex&

audio is very rough like I said and the web compression just makes it worse (I used a lot of compression on the audio because I don' t have much web space right now.) We used a custom built dolly and custom jib with a 12 foot arm. Yes I do know the music doesn't go very well but it was better than nothing. thanks for any comments I will post more when I get a chance. We have been shooting 3day weeks from 7pm to 7am all three days and doing equipment returns on the 4th day for about two months now. We're about half way through principal photography, should be around 85 min when completed, I will probably start editing picture in a month or so and sound will take another 3 months (5.1) color correction will take more time too. I have a small scene edited which I will post in a few days.

Didn't like it. Sorry.

Re: New Horror\Thriller Feature "The Complex&

Not bad. To critique I would quicken the edits and the lighting on the exteriors could be more dramatic. Also, please stretch the frame back out; it does look anamorphic squished.

Re: New Horror\Thriller Feature "The Complex&

85 minutes? That is ambitious.

Shooting so much in low light doesn't really play to the camera's strengths.

The custom jib and dolly seem to work pretty well.

I'll agree with this others. This didn't seem like a trailer. Is this the same movie with the guy and his buddy and the blonde girlfriend comes over? I thought that was a comedy.
Still good work on a lot of it. I like the hollow emptiness of the gym. That looks like a great scene. I like my horror with a tad more blood. When the guy got his throat cut. I'm not talking Kill Bill 1 geysers of blood. But maybe more of the old sangre flowing.
Maybe you could cut it into a little tight teaser with some creepier music.
I look forward to seeing more.

Love the camera work. Was great how it kept getting to a tense moment and then *ring*. I was like arrrrgh! lol

The camera work very nice though. I understand the compression causes loss of quality. I can imagine the uncompressed version looks great!

Re: New Horror\Thriller Feature "The Complex&

great video
camera work and lighting were the main things that stood out to me as being awesome.
The sound regardless of the codec quality is something to be addressed, for example adding in sound effects when she turns on the light etc.

And i would debate whether that music is better than nothing :P

Re: New Horror\Thriller Feature "The Complex&

I liked this clip. I am interested in making my own movies (just as a goof mostly) but really want to make them look as if they were made on "film" rather than video.

I do not yet have a camera and "was" considering the Canon XL1s or Sony VX2100 (vx?). Anyway, neither of these have the 24p mode which people have advised me gives the most cinematic quality to a video. I really like what you have done and am wondering several things that perhaps you can answer for me.

I assume you used the DVX100 to film this since that is what this forum is about. But that is neither here nor there can you tell me for the clip I saw the following information.

1. Camera used
2. Mode (24p, 30p, 60i etc.)
3. Software used to edit
4. Filter used for the "cinematic" look.

Any help would be great. It is looking more and more like the DVX100 may be the camera I get even though there is no chance I intend to put my video to film. I still like the film look and have heard the 24p is the best method to attain this.

audio audio audio. This could be a very good flick (imagry is very good) but the audio is VERY VERY rough. I would also consider plunking down the money to get some good intense music. The music you have now sounds seriously canned and dosen't lend itself to the tension at all. If you invested lots to time and money in the production, it would be worth your time to either try to fix the audio to a pro level or hire a sound guy to clean it up. With the current audio, i'd give it a 3 with good audio i'd give it a 8.5.

***one man's opinion***

Yeah, but he said the audio wasn't finished. He also stated that the music was added just for fun...

Re: New Horror\Thriller Feature "The Complex&

I would have to agree with DVmaker.
audio audio audio.... I think you have done a very good job on this... but the music and sound FX make the film sound childishly done.
I think if you put some money into this it would turn out really good.
The suspens is there... the music slapped me in the face. too happy music.

Re: New Horror\Thriller Feature "The Complex&

I know you've said that the audio is only temporary, and that it's heavily compressed to fit into your alloted web space, but ... maybe you should secure some better hosting before posting it next time. While your pan/dolly shots seem well-executed, I couldn't finish watching the clip because of the very poor quality (overcompressed) audio. :/

I'll give it another watch when you post a higher-quality clip, though. (Keep an eye on the aspect ratio, too.)
