New HMC Owner Requests Help - Defective Camera or Me Dumb?

I believe this camera is light hungry .

The HMC-150 has the best or close to the best sensitivity and lowest noise in the 1/3" class.

I still havent gotten it " Canon XHA1 clean " .

My HMC-150s have better low light sensitivity and less noise than my A1s did. I did a lot of side by side shooting with the two before my return period was up on the HMC-150, or I would have not kept it.

The A1 has a different looking noise to me and is more noticeable. My A1s also had very mild noise even on 0 db gain.

I have just been editing a wedding I shot back in October using the A1 (now gone) and HMC-150. They do have very different looks to them, even when matched as best I could before the shoot. The A1 seems to have a warmer look that using the Vegas color corrector, does not go away. In comparison, the HMC-150 has a much cooler look, although not trending blue. I think the HMC-150 colors are easier to correct in post for sure. Im not sure why this would be though.

When applying sharpening in post, the A1 takes it better and it comes out better than the HMC-150. There is no doubt the A1 is capable of good sharp images.

Bottom line, different cameras, each with its strong points, both very good.

A reply from Pany:
"Your footage does appear to have excessive chroma noise."

They want it returned under warrenty for repair or replace.

It seems I'm not going mad or being picky!

:)

Good to know.
This should help others as well so thank you for keep us all up to date!!

Jeff,

Does the footage I posted look ok to you?

No, that footage did not look good.

There could be a lot of reasons why, but from your posts of the settings, I didn't see any reason. I don't know/remember if you did a black balance or not (where you hold the WB button longer). The video was way too dark for any kind of good lighting scenario. Even so it seemed awful noisy.

Thankfully Panasonic is going to check it out or replace it.

i think i might have the same problem as mrfluffy. no matter what i do i can not get rid of the noise. i have tried indoors and out, tried different lighting, ran through all the settings but there's a lot of noise. any other suggestions before i call pany. i just received it from willoughbys in the beginning of march. i should have fully tested it then so i could have returned it to them or exchanged it for another instead of mailing it to pany.

thanks in advance

They wont do anything. You just have to make sure that you zebras are at 100% and are only just hidden. Then you can get good footage.

mrfluffy, i dont understand. are you saying that panny will not do anything about the problem. i thought that you were sending yours in.

thanks

Here is a shot taken with the 151 in F1 720/25p, no gain, extracted raw from AfterEffects from the AVCHD file. No processing at all.

The noise is ghastly.

Maybe its cause I have a nice monitor but honestly I don't see much of any noise at all

Hidef those do look pretty clean. But then again its a lower res pic. So I cant judge it

I will try to reset mine Barry .
The viper shot looks terrible but I and others here would know how to get it cleaner even on the XHA1, gain -3 .

The picture from the olderwoman is XHA1 and the younger woman is HMC150.
Since when was that terrible? I thought that shot looked amazing compared to the xlh1 and not just as far as noise
