New here.... with questions

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and I just wanted to hello and let you know that I'm impressed with this forum, the moderation, it's members, and especially the quality of the content.

My background in video & editing in the past was specifically web-based instructional videos. I've only ever used small hand-held cameras and I'm finially in the market for a new camera and stepping up the game a little for our website. Thus, I think I've narrowed down the field to the HMC40 camera for a few reasons:

1) I think the quality of the videos that I've seen on YouTube and within this forum are nice.
2) The ease of recording in AVCHD
3) Recording to SDHC
4) HD
5) The price
6) The optional XLR option

Most of the video's that I would be recording are simple interview type and instructional videos, most of which are outside along streams. I only use Power Director 8 for editing right now so it is complient with AVCHD so I think I'm set and about ready to buy....

Does anyone here have a website with their own videos that they'd like to share as I'd like to see more example videos. If so if you can message me a link that would be great as well.

It looks like I'll be getting the camera as welll as the optional XLR Adapter, memory card, and mics. How many minutes of record time do you get on a 16GB card at highest quality?

Last question - Has anyone had any issues using this camera in the cold? Say below freezing? 20-32 degrees? Do you suggest a polar cover?

Thanks again and I look forward to being a part of your forum in the near future.

I have to go to work very soon, but at least I can point to my VIMEO account with lots of HMC40 videos including lots of tests with the HMC40:

IF you have signed up for VIMEO (free sign-up), the downloads of the videos are possible.

16GB = about 90 minutes of recording time.

I live in Southern California, so cold for us is when it drops below 50 degrees.

However, being solid state on the recording system, I see no reason why the camera would have any problems recording in the cold. The batteries may show less power and the mechanical elements of the lens may stick, BUT that holds true for all video cameras. The good news is that there's no video tape to worry about.
