New HD-SDI Recorder vs P2, ???

Well, you're not going to gain much if the component output on the HVX is 8bit to begin with (before anyone jumps on me for using 'bits' in referring to an analog signal, I'm using it for convenience sake though I realize it's not entirely accurrate) Tests would have to be done to see if there is any serious quality gain by capturing the component signal at 8bt vs 10bit.

And you can definitely do this cheaper with a Blackmagic card, converter and a G5.

This thing cost 15K... you can probably get a G5 (that is usefull for MANY other things as well) with all the trimings for about half of that or less.

Another point about the component output... who's to say what it is yet?... 1080i or 720p 60... or both? And if you want to record off speeds at 720p there's no flagged frames, all extra frame removal will have to be done by other means... In other words, we don't know enough about how the HVX presents HD via the components outputs to make decisions like you're trying to make... and besides, why not wait and see how good DVCPRO-HD is before trying to experiment?

This would actually be a detrimental conversion. Maybe Barry should create a sticky post about this issue, since it seems to come up a lot: DVCProHD footage is compressed, and you don't want to store a decompressed version of it until you actually alter the frames. To transmit the footage over SDI, for example, it has to be decompressed and bloated far beyond its original 100-megabit-per-second data rate, and you've gained absolutely no quality. Then you need tons of RAID space and an add-on card to capture it, when even a modest ATA drive would've worked fine for the original footage captured over Firewire with no quality loss.

If you do decide to convert some or even all of the footage to an uncompressed format for compositing or a color-corrected archival version, you might as well do it on the computer. You'll have no worries about the hardware keeping up, as you might when trying to capture a playout over SDI. And you can delay that conversion until the end of your process, working with the much-more-wieldy DVCProHD footage while editing.

Jim,
It appears that information is starting to appear:

"
D4 component output
As a camera image output, 1080i/720p/480i (each 59. 94Hz) The analog component which can output each signal (Y/Pb/PR) we have the terminal, can view with the general HD/SD TV monitor."

In Janglish, but it's there.

BTW, this info came from the site posted in another thread:
