I should add that this poll is based on your real requirements for HD. As soon as I remember the details I posted before I will. But for now its getting late <yawn>

I already shoot HD, and would like the HVX200 to intercut with my VariCams. :)

Hey Harlan,

How does the Varicam do on a green screen? Is the image to tape OK to key? Or is it a lot better to just take the uncompressed out to a computer? I know a lot of people like to take Sony's straight into a computer.

That low number for clients asking for HD is surprising and says a lot. I keep hearing around here- "Why shoot HD? There arent many HD TV's!"

I am in an area(in the Midwest) that isnt tech savvy or forward thinking but for the last 2 YEARS you either shoot HD or film for broadcast work. I'm talking the $10,000 spot and up. The kind of work that comes through the ad agencies. The agencies (and now some clients) have been hip to 24P and HD for years and you are always going up against people that are pitching HD 24P or film. There is no other option. They dont give a crap about how many HD TV sets are out there. They are used to looking at Sony Cine Alta footage or Varicam footage and thats what they want to see.
So everytime I hear someone question the value of anyone shooting HD, I scratch my head. For a lot of the Pros, there isnt any choice.

I want HD for dramitic productions aimed at 35mm film transfer for screening- or for HD digital theatrical screenings.

..cant believe thats not an option in the poll.

I agree with Loser. As soon as I get the camera I'm going to shoot some HD footage and bring it to work so they can project it on their 2K Christie. That will be the real test for me.

iamloser, I should have clarified. When I posted the poll originally I went into detail about what it was asking. It was accidentally deleted during housekeeping so it was quite late when I reposted it.

I started the poll, not to find out what people wanted to do, but to find out what the reality of the situation of their business is (it was aimed at people who do camerawork and video for a living).

So in your case if you have actually had clients requesting you to use high def for 35mm transfer then you would select the "I've had clients enquire about HD already" option. However unless you have actually had people asking you to use HD please don't tick that option as it would give a false overall picture of things.

Dsleep, I hear what you are saying. But the vast majority of us don't work at that level. The poll was aimed at people here, so obviously if more people here worked in high end video using F900's etc then the number of clients asking for HD in the poll would be much higher.

In high end video it is a given that HD or film will be used. If someone asks me to shoot HD and wants something high end I would just hire out a Varicam or F900 etc. I wouldn't need to actually purchase a camera for the job. But the reality is that in the low end of the sector, for corporate training videos, educational videos etc, as we can see by the poll many of those types of clients possibly don't know what HD is, or have a requirement for it even if they did.

I think if we leave this poll here as a sticky it will be very interesting to see how it develops as HD becomes more and more widespread and the HVX is released.

I should also add that it will be interesting to see how the "I foresee needing an HD camera in the near future" bar compares to the "My clients have no clue about HD" as time goes by.

Yeah, Simon, I hear ya. The only thing that annoys me are the posts where people unequivocally state that there isnt demand or use for HD and cite the lack of HD TV's. Its just a reminder that for at least some of us HD has been a given for years. From a production format standpoint, anywho.

None of my clients could care less about HD or even know what it is for that matter. However, fo me HD is something I see in my not to distant future. Would I shoot HD at a wedding, most likley no, unless they really really begged me to do so, and would cover the cost of renting the cameras. But as for right now, DVX for weddings is great. DVX for films is great. HDV200 for weddings (BAD BAD BAD), but that's ok, becasue I hate weddings and will gladly stop doing them when people stop paying me to do so. HDV200 for films, well, that's what it will be made for, so need I say more?

Dsleep, yep, again I hear ya. See thats what this poll sorts out. People can't cite excuses such as a lack of HDTV's. The poll shows the reality of what is happening with the clients of people on this board who work with video for a living. So if anyone wants to make an argument about clients demands for HD, just point them in the direction of this polls results.

I agree.

HD without 24p is Really Sharp Video to me. You didn't give us an option of:

1. I would like HD-24p for my filmmaking adventures.

Nope. Because as I mentioned I started this poll to find out peoples actual video business needs for making money. The whole purpose of this was to get away from what people wanted personally. For ecample I would love to shoot HD everyday, but my clients have not demanded HD at all, nor have they even heard of it. This poll exists to separate what camera users 'want' (ie what people on these forums crave) as opposed to what people are actually having to shoot to satisfy clients.

I should clarify. Most indie adventures are a personal quest, not a client driven one. They are not a true reflection on the demand for HD as most high end features are shot in either 35mm or HD. Low end indies merely want to match this. Therefore it is no indication of the demand for HD in eveyday video.
