They are still available in stores, yes. But as for "selling tons"? The latest sales figures I've found are for 2005, which are the lowest they've been since 1996! Music sales overall are up, but that's due to downloading. Music sales were up 22% from 2004, but CD sales were down.

And that begs the point -- when people think that DVD is just gonna "disappear" because HD DVD players are technically available for sale, it simply shows no understanding of history. Standard-def DVD will be the dominant disc delivery system for at least the next 8 years, according to Kagan.

Right, but that's not a quantum-leap advantage. It's just MORE of what you already have, just like a 50-gig hard drive is preferable to a 5-gig or 10-gig hard drive. But other than that, you don't see any difference.
 
I think I heard recently that Tower Records were going to be closing their doors. Rhino stores here are already gone.

Oh yeah, that's just mmy personal preference. My personal preference won't move a market, I just like the idea of having a larger, more portable storage capacity. I have a 100gig Adobe Illustrator file folder parked n my G-Raid... I'd love to archive that to something else y'know? But I guess that's what externals are for.

The Tower Records thing is already happening, as well. Started end of last year and I think they'll all be phased by middle of this year. Sad sad.
 
Target, Walmart and Best Buy are taking over the retail sales of music and as Music rebounds and people migrate to the communistic stores, they will rise again. The courting period is over for the MP3 players and the novelty has worn off , Digital music sales declined for 2006 as well meaning Music was sagging for the year not just retail. They will both rebound, as CD's will be here to stay.

You think so Nostradamus? People are gonna be buying iphone's, not cds. I buy like one CD a year, one. Novelty wearing off? CD's here to stay? Hahaha. Good one. :beer:
 
Yes i think so. Didnt think my opinion had to be laughed at though. My friend and i purchase a couple dozen CD's a year since we are sharing our buying trends.

Don't get me wrong -- I think high-capacity DVD will probably be heavily adopted for data storage -- unless something better comes along.

Music CDs are dead in the same way VHS movies were dead in 2001; they just hadn't stopped moving yet.
 
I've got about 1200 CDs right now but have only bought perhaps 6 in the past year. If it's something I really like, I'll buy the CD. If I think I only want a couple of songs from the CD I go to iTunes. I've spent a lot more at iTunes this past year than "record" stores. The money that used to go to CDs is now spent on DVDs.
 
theres a product i rarely invest in unless its a direct to dvd release or something similar, such as Bubba Ho Tep. But last year, i can estimate i bought around 2 or 3 dvd's
 
Dang. 2 or 3?

I just bought 3 DVDs yesterday. And 1 the Tuesday before, and 1 the tuesday before that, and 3 the tuesday before that.

Well, I seldom go to the theater. Mayber 5 times a year. But I see everything I want on DVD.
 
i go to the theatre about 4 or 5 times a year as well.

I can do it because i dont like the DVD format. My friends either get impatient and buy the movies themselves or i just netflix whatever we want to see. My brother has a massive DVD collection of crap they dont watch but once. Theres a ton of stuff ive watched that i wont watch again, it was all great, but i dont need to see it again. if i do i netflix it and its here the next day. Not to say i dont own a few DVD's, but i have no need to have a movie collection on a spec i am not a fan of.

I do the same with HD-DVD/BD but i also bought a few like Army of Darkness and The Thing, Goodfellas. I did somehow get a DVD collection of around 100 even though i didnt buy them. I think its since every DVD is watched at my place cuz of the HDTV they end up getting left at my place. Some good stuff in that closet i ran into including pr0n! woot!

On the other end though i buy 2 or 3 maybe 4 or 5 in better release months, Games a month. I dont purchase garbage though so some months there isnt a single game to buy and i go unfulfilled.

Now as far as HDTV goes, if you compared SD DVD on say a 21" or even 32" and then you watched it on the SAME SET in HD, I doubt I would see any difference either.

HDTVs start to make Sense when you have large screens, as the size gets bigger the difference between SD and HD becomes more and more plane to see, thats why I will never buy a HDTV less than 52"

i had a 26" HDTV up to about a week ago, had it for a year and must contridict this statement. DIfference was night and day when compared to similarly sized SDTV CRT junkers.
