Hi guys and gals,

By request, here is another Robert Burks clip from the same shoot in Dec '05.

The other threads with m2t's should be up in February when the account bandwidth gets reset. Until then, enjoy this clip from my measely comcast webspace.

have fun amigos....

Stephen, your clips are gold! I'm downloading it but I'm @dial-up by now. In six hours I will be @broadband. Is it possible to link that oriental clips (during next hours) that I didn't have opportunity to download it? Thanks in advance!

Stephen, do you capture the sound on-camera or with a separate sound recorder?

At least, to me the sound, well, it sounds very well!

What's your opinion about the HD100's compressed audio system? HDV audio is it enough?

I read that maybe soon it will be available PCM channels@HD100. Do you know anything about this?

Thx in advance!

Very pleased with audio....

Very pleased with audio....

Hi Emanuel - Since I have not seen much talk on audio in regards to the JVC, thought I'd chip in... We use a Sound Devices Mix Pre with our HD101E and are really pleased with the quality of the audio:thumbsup: - In our own tests with various mics (Senn 416 / Senn Lav MKE2 / BD M58) we found that we had to crank the volume up a bit more than we would like too with certain mics, when going direct into the camera (no mixer).

No further forward really...

No further forward really...

Hi Emanuel - Interesting read.... our commercial recordings are only needed in DV at the moment so can't comment on HDV audio recording yet... however the few studio tests we have recorded in HDV have sounded pretty good for what we need it for - talking heads. Our studio uses DAT for everything else.

There is a thread over at DVinfo.net on the HD100 forum where folks are discussing the Nikon adapter. There are no actual test pics available from the company who makes the adapter - So until someone is able to show the product in action with a range of lenses, I'm not sure that it would be of any benefit to the kind of work we do... at the moment we are trying to perfect our chroma keying with this camera - so shallow DoF is easy:grin:

Are you still trying to make your mind up as to which camera to buy?

Emanuel, In the clip scenario above, I use the camera audio to sync the audio captured using the remote recording station. That recording station consist of Dell Laptop/Sonar 4PE/ADS firewire drive/Edirol UA-101 snaked into a Mackie CFX16 live mixer. Rarely do I use the live audio off the camera for anything other than ambient crowd noise. That's in a music scenario.

In a commercial scenario or 'on location' scenario, the camera audio is good enough and the quality depends on the microphone selected. The preamp built into the JVC is far better than the DVX and DVC camaras. The noise floor on DVC30 is -45dB (yuk) and on the DVX it is -55dB (barely acceptable). The JVC circuit is -70dB which is very good. None of them compare to a dedicated audio setup. The Edirol UA-101's noise floor is an incredible -97dB. Now that is silent!

The preamp is really good on the camera and the audio quality depends on your mic. As Always I recommend AT or senn or AKG.

good luck...

Thank you both!

Stephen, did you see the open thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=44280.

Ty Ford and limo991 disagree. Ty's purpose to 384 kbps stereo MPEG1 audio -- well, not precisely...he said to the miniDV 16-bit 48kHz audio: «A good mixer with a good preamp is also a good idea. For simple shoots a Sound Devices MixPre does a great job.»

Is it necessary an external preamp@HD100 -- like Sound Devices MixPre? Considering your words that the preamp built into the JVC (-70dB) is far better than the DVX and DVC cameras?

I'd like hear you 'cause I'd like capture the audio on-camera with the image for dialogues and I'm not sure if so much compressed signal can be considered acceptable to 35mm film-out purposes at big screen or not? -- it's my major doubt...

limo991 are saying that 384kbps stereo MPEG1 it will be enough to dialogues, ambience and some effects...

Otherwise, this: «Soon" the ProHD concept will be enhanced with two PCM audio tracks to use the full MiniDV bandwidth of 25 megabit per second (up to now ProHD uses only 19 Mbit/s). Maybe, with a firmware update, perhaps with a successor of the HD100 presented at NAB 2006.» LINK. Did you hear something else, Stephen?

Do you know the major problem here and there? All need to justify for themselves the investment done (the HVX pre-order fever, for instance). Or the interests involved. In my case, the best future purchase option for my job life and my partners' as well. Isn't it fair enough?

I wrote it on that thread too. The JVC HD-100 not only records the HDV MPEG audio but also the PCM uncompressed audio. JVC always records all 4 tracks. If there is a problem with the HDV audio then you can always get the uncompressed audio off the tape.

no big deal.....

BTW: The audio is good enough.

Thanks Stephen! Great news! I didn't know! I thought Robert's post was info for the future not for today.

So, an external preamp@HD100 like Sound Devices MixPre -- considering your words that the preamp built into the JVC (-70dB) is far better than the DVX and DVC cameras; it's not necessary or am I wrong?

I also ask you to pay attention to that thread 'cause it appears always people to say this or that and sometimes it's just a mess -- mere argue report or simply FUD.

Thanks again for your helpful input! [You are the HD100's Barry Green! I'm just kidding...despite the compliment (he is our HVX guru), you are Stephen L. Noe and it's more than good enough! :)]

Some real life situations for you....

Some real life situations for you....

Emanuel - Not sure what kind of work you are doing but see if this helps....

In one situation - street type interviews on the move (broadcast work) - we had no choice but to shoot with very little equipment but still needed good quality audio.... we used a Senn G2 radio system with an MKE2 lav mic (this needs boosted a little compared to the cheaper mic that comes with the system) direct to camera - the sound was Very Good! Very Clean! - However when we have choices we prefer to use a dedicated sound guy running a wired boom and a wired lav (lav needs the senn adapter MZ900) through the mix-pre as this gives us greater control - and the audio once again is very very good.

My information at DV Info Net was referring to audio on MiniDV tape as a part of the HDV stream. From what I know, the HD100 does not record PCM uncompressed audio to tape up to now. But that will change "soon".

Robert,

It does record PCM now and has from the beginning here in the States. You must put the camera in DV mode to capture the uncompressed audio.

Scenario: Recording HDV 720p24 will record the HDV compressed audio along with the video. Also their are two PCM audio tracks layed on the tape simultaneously. The trick is that you need to put the camera into DV mode in order to capture the PCM audio. So essentially, if you wanted to capture the HDV A/V and the PCM uncompressed audio you'd need to capture the tape in HDV mode and DV mode.

Really, it's no big deal...

I wasn't aware of that either.

So what happens when you play the tape? Is the video scrambled and the audio fine? I guess you set the NLE to audio capture only..? Are the time codes usable and will they match the HDV timecode?

Finally, can you hear the difference between the PCM and the compressed audio anyway?

Thanks Stephen, you really are the "HD100 guru!"

mmm,

You hit the nail on the head. You capture audio only from the DV. You can sync the audio waveforms easily with a slate clapper or any audio cue you can find. As far as quality goes, it's 16bit as is the HDV captured audio is 16bit. Real quality come at 24 bit which no camera can capture. In my opinion the HDV audio and uncompressed audio are not noticebly different. It comes down to the noise floor. JVC's noise floor is -70 either way so the audio is good.

good luck...
