HPX250: New HCX1000 vs HPX 250 ?

Curious to know if anyone has seen the new Panasonic HCX 1000 4K camera and how it would compare to my HPX250....

Cheap at $3,000, high resolution pics.
 
The HPX250 is a lot bigger, the HC-X1000 is a quite small camera. The X1000 records 4K, the HPX250 only does as high as 1080p. But the HC-X1000 is nowhere near as sensitive as the HPX250; it has an effective ISO of about 50, whereas the HPX250 is around 500 IIRC. Meaning, you'd need 10x as much light for equivalent brightness.

I think the X1000 is a great little camera, but it's not for unlit interiors. It's fantastic for outdoors events coverage. If your work is indoors, the HPX250 is much more sensitive.
 
Thanks Barry, is there a Panasonic Camera you would chose for getting a more DSLR look? Or is that not possible. Getting more backgrounds out of focus. Or do you have to join the DSLR bandwagon and drop the HPX250 to get that look? I use the HPX 250 but its pretty much a straight news look. As you say, good in doors and very easy to use. But does not feel like it can produce something like the Cannon C100.

Hi Barry, how does the X1000 compare with the PX270, image-wise (color, sharpness, etc)? I rented the PX270 and loved it but I need a smaller camera and if the X1000 picture looks like the PX270, I'd be very happy.

The HPX-250 doesn't have that large sensor look. But if you know how to color grade and customize the LUT table to that of film to the the footage, it'll be similar to any large sensor. But in its unprocessed, raw form, it lacks that native shallow DOF and color fidelity typically found on large sensor cam. It'll look very clean and news-like when unprocessed. The biggest advantage of the HPX-250 is its speed and mobility to practically cover almost anything over any large format Super 35 camera where you have to either buy super expensive PL lenses (more than $40K) or change lens which will greatly increase dust accumulation to the sensor in the field.

The AF100 though suddenly out of favor, is still a very good camera and I still use it to get the "DSLR Look" and it can be purchased new for under $2K, a steal in my opinion.

The forthcoming DVX200. It's basically the size of an HPX250, but with a chip that is literally 16x larger than the HPX250. It sounds like it would do pretty much exactly what you want. Coming out this October-ish.

I didn't try them side by side. The PX270 is the best 1/3" camera on the market, in my opinion. The X1000 is not in its same class as regards functions and features; on the other hand, it's a 4K camera. The 1080p out of the X1000 is great, but again, the sensitivity difference is massive, shoots that are eminently practical on the PX270 could prove very difficult on the X1000 without substantial lighting.

The AF100 is definitely an option as well. I had referenced the DVX200 because operationally, it would be extremely similar to the HPX250 the OP already has. The AF100 would be good as well, and provide the same DOF as the DVX200, but the main difference being that the DVX200's form factor and power zoom lens/OIS etc would be more comparable to the HPX250's, than the AF100's interchangeable lens would.

That sounds great ! Major change to Chip size. I like the Panasonic cameras so would like to stick with them. Just finding the HPX250 is possibly getting a bit old now.
