new hardware found

I've recently bought a delightful second hand DVX100A. However when I connect it via firewire to my pc it says "new hardware found" and asks for a cd (it will not install if i select the automatic search option, it just sasy the hardware is not connected properly if i do that).
The DVX did not come with a cd of drivers or anything like that. I am running Windows XP and have an OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 controller. I had assumed it should just be able to pick up the cam.
Does anyone have any ideas what this problem might be? And how to solve it?
kind regards
Emma Jane :)

Strange, what program are you using to capture the footage? Also, I highly recomend buying a cheap mini dv cam that carries timecode to do your capturing. It will save the heads on your dvx.

Also, you should only connect your camera to your computer when both machines are off (if you're using a desktop PC or any kind of Mac) to avoid frying the firewire port on the camera.

lol. well i'm clearly a complete klutz!
i got Premiere as part of the Creative Studio package but it doesn't even get that far, the PC itself just doesn't recognise the cam, but that's probably a good thing :) i'll get the old Sony out and save my DVX the trouble, thanks guys...

On the other hand, this is most of the times a sign of a half-fried firewire port. I would recommend to test the camera on a computer that you know it recognises DV devices.

it's a brand new firewire port, and it reads my Sony TRV so I don't know what it is but sticking the Sony in is good enough for me for now. thanks all :)

oh really? better check that out then, it's only two months old. i'll ask the guy i bought it off.
