Wanted to share my latest project here, I've been getting lots of compliments about the cinematography/color, and I'm pretty proud of it myself! (NSFW - Some cursing and strong sexual content)

Shot on the GH4 with Metabones Speedbooster XL, Sigma 18-35 ART lens, Canon 24-105, and the shot above the bed was with the Lumix 12-35. 24p, and the slow motion stuff was shot at 36fps with the song playing at 150%. Also used a Cinevate Duzi slider. Cine D, graded with the crazy good Leeming One Lut and FilmConvert!

Lighting was very simple. The big window to the left of the bed did most of the work. I also had a Ikan daylight LED and some diffused Lowel Pro lights bouncing around to even things out a bit. Feedback appreciated!

Dude that was excellent. What a great example of what the GH4 can do. You should be getting a lot of great comments on the cinematography, its beautiful man. Lots of great variety and fun with the shots yet they were clean and never distracting. Honestly I was so wrapped up in the performance I lost track of nitpicking the video on the camera itself. Thats a good thing. Watching it a second time I can honestly say I have a hard time telling this is a GH4 and a prime example of just what the camera is capable of doing in the right hands. Its no longer about the camera but the person using the camera and you nailed it hard.

The color was beautiful as well. I love how white the environment is with the two people standing out as the focal point of every shot. It calls attention to their significance and makes them resonate as the center of that universe, to each other of course.

Great use of existing lighting with a bit of help from another light source. Using existing lighting can be a bit risky but in this case I think it worked out great. Sunlight really helps fill in the ultra clean look to the white room.

Leeming LUT wins again. It really is an amazing LUT for the GH4 and makes Cine-D shine. I also bought it recently and now a friend of mine bought it and he is very happy with it as well. Really the best color we have both ever seen from the GH4 and now your video proves it once again.

My only complaint about the Youtube version is that it seems highly compressed. Nothing against your great piece but I saw a lot of compression artifacts in the 1080p version. Is there a 4k version to upload or did you master everything at 1080p?

Wow, thanks for the kind words! I really appreciate it!

Most of my content was in 1080 slomo, so I stuck with 1080 for the final output. I did, however, try something new...This was the first time I used a ProRes file for YouTube. I've been reading about that and saw some comments from folks who were getting better results with ProRes as opposed to h.264...Do you think this has more artifacts then the average YouTube vid? I'm not sure if it's better or not...YouTube really mucks things up, and even after doing multiple uploads of the same video I haven't decided which is best.

Honestly I'm very sensitive to artifacts and I'm sure most people will not see them. I only noticed them in some of the fast moving shots when the guy and the lady flew onto the bed or rolled over quickly. Darn good shots by the way. Its tricky to get fast moving shots like that to work well but you pulled it off.

I'm typically also one of those people who complain about the softness of FF lenses and focal reducers but really with your piece it never once bothered me and has convinced me to once again explore using adapted lenses on the GH4. Not to mention if you shot slo-mo on the GH4 you had to use its slightly less detailed method of down converting the sensor to 1080p and even with that I was still impressed by the quality. Just goes to show how good the HD mode on the GH4 and even the GH3 really was.

Loved it - thanks for sharing.

Again and again people are showing in the right hands (not mine obviously) the GH4 can produce stunning work.

Nailed it!! :D

Nothing else to say. So happy to see such amazing results that I had a small hand in :) This really felt like Red Epic footage (which I am obviously familiar with). Great use of ETTR and good grading to maximise the dynamic range and keep the beautiful high key whites.

Props!

Cheers,

Paul :)

Thanks for the love everyone! Always feels good to get compliments from other professionals!

How did you set up camera for over the bed shots?

I used a C stand with a grip arm, and placed a 5/8 baby pin in the grip head. Then I used this http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1046652-REG/matthews_350625_baby_pin_adapter.html on the baby pin, and screwed a small photo ball head onto that, and mounted the GH4 with lumix 12-35 to the ball head. Once I extended the grip arm over the bed, I actually used the Panasonic Image app on my iPhone to get framing and even adjust exposure without having to climb over the talent too much. MY HDMI port is fried so unfortunately a monitor was out of the question.

Hopefully I explained that clearly enough...not the most steady solution, but with a couple sandbags it held up well! I should have taken a picture of it, haha.
