New game consoles putting HD in a lot of households?

I know a lot of folks seem concerned about HD delivery systems not really being common in a lot of households. I'm thinking a lot of companies will possibly be making HD monitors even cheaper in the face of the game consoles coming out because gamers are going to want them and the gaming market is huge as we know. Thoughts?

The PS3 is going to have a blu-ray burner to!

No....I don't think so.

Nowhere have I read ANYTHING about a Blu-ray Burner. And besides....even in the spring of 06' it would still be too costly to implement a Blu-ray Burner. That would break the bank by a long shot. The sweet spot for Game consoles has long been $299. The official pricing structure has not yet been released, but it is expected to be in the $299-399 range. A built-in Blu-ray burner would put it WAY above that price.

Thanx for playing in this week's edition of Console F.U.D.!! Join us next time for more outlandish statements and unfounded accusations!!

HD Television sets will definately become cheaper. But for most households they're still just too expensive right now. HD is definately the future, and eventually everyone will have one. But the change is going to happen SLOWLY. The speed will increase as they get cheaper.

Where did you hear the Blue-Ray burner rumor? I haven't heard that, and it seems weird since HD-DVD and Blue Ray are talking about combining their efforts due to pressure from the Film Studios. Sounds like BS to me. Blue-Ray isn't even finalized as a format yet, and the talks are going on because they want to avoid another format war (ie. Betamax and VHS). Sony owns some movie studios, and gunking up distribution isn't in their best interest. Like I said...PS3 with a blue ray burner? Sounds like BS.

It won't be a burner, but the games are going to be in the Blu-ray format. I think that the Blu-ray disc will hold up to 54 Gigs of data.

Sorry, don't want to start rumors, read the release to fast! It can play burnt Blu-ray discs and the games will come in a blu-ray format.

The last thing I read on that was that "Talks had ended" with no decisive move to join forces.

UPDATE:

Toshiba gets tough on Blu-ray

05/17/2005
The Asahi Shimbun

Negotiations to reach a compromise on the standardization of next-generation DVDs could be headed for a deadlock as the group led by Toshiba has said it will be too difficult to modify the structure of their disc along the rival camp's standards.

Senior officials of Toshiba Corp., which leads supporters of the HD DVD format, toughened their opposition to adopting a disc structure based on the rival Blu-ray Disc format at the general meeting of the HD DVD Promotion Group held in Tokyo on Monday.

A Toshiba official said at the meeting that it would be difficult to adopt the Blu-ray Disc structure.

HD DVD discs write data on a layer 0.6 millimeters from the surface, the same depth as current DVDs. Maintaining that standard would reduce production costs.

Blu-ray discs, supported by a camp led by Sony Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., have a memory layer only 0.1 mm from the surface, which advocates say reduces reading errors and provides greater storage capacity.

Since the talks started in early March, the Blu-ray camp has insisted on adoption of the 0.1-mm structure.

Toshiba officials said it would be difficult to persuade representatives of the Hollywood film studios that are proponents of HD DVD to accept the Blu-ray format. They also say the format's only advantage is the larger capacity, which enables longer recording times.

However, a senior Toshiba official said the company will continue negotiations by calling for adoption of the 0.6 mm deep memory layer.(IHT/Asahi: May 17,2005)

Was it common knowledge that the PS3 games were going to be Blu-ray or did Sony just drop a bomb on the whole HD consortium with this release? Are we going to have to buy the PS3 then have to get another HD-DVD player down the road to watch movies? Who knows now.

Answered my own question by checking it out. They announced it way back when. That would seem to put them in a position where they can't make any compromises in the future. Toshiba is also pushing a higher capacity HD-DVD to compete with BD capacities. No end in sight I'd say. Either way I think the game consoles will speed up HD proliferation a bit. Helping out us potential HVX users.

God this is going to be another beta vs. VCR tape thing. Its going to suck. Well then again it will have prices low so i guess thats a good thing but you are going to have to have both :(

If i wanna take around my films or keep data i will probably use BD because of the protection, Then PS3 is usually a must, and one of new Dell´s 24 inch. monitors. I don´t know... I don´t know, it´s a difficult decission, but HD DVD will be just for films, and right now normal DVDs do their thing for me quite well (or maybe i will encode them in H.264).

The studios will decide, because they control the content.

So far most of them have signed onto the HD-DVD camp.

I dont really care which format wins out, just start rolling those films out!!

If it's like every other video technology, the adult companies will decide and so far, it appears that they are going blu-ray.

Word. I like Blu-Ray. I think Sony actually got it RIGHT this time. Too bad they can't do the same for other sectors......Ah HUM.....Cough.....Cough....True 24P!!

The Hollywood community is as myopic as usual. This is not a format war in the same way that beta vs. VHS was. A beta deck could not play a VHS tape and vice-versa. Whereas there is no technical limitation that prevents an HD-DVD player from playing a standard definition and Blu-ray HD disks and vice-versa. It just takes about fifty cents worth of extra components.

The issue has more to do with replication; HD-DVD is an upgrade to most of the current DVD mastering equipment whereas Blu-ray requires a complete recapitalization. Sorry, if it coasts distributors more to upgrade, providing much better quality, in order for them to get their greedy little hands deeper into the consumers wallet – fu** them, so be it!

It wasn’t Hollywood studios that caused the pull back of HD-DVD and Blu-ray equipment at NAB, it was the Japanese government attempting to stave off any perception of a format war. Their economy can not afford a protracted marketing battle. Much of the technology has been developed and is ready for manufacturing, they will agree on a standard or either Toshiba or Sony will find themselves on the wrong side of a trade embargo. My money is on Sony winning that argument.

As far as the Hollywood studios, content evenly divided between the two competing standards.

Apex, or some other Asian electronics maker will come up with a player that plays every kind of disc on the earth and for much less than any major brands player, you know? They were one of the first to integrate MP3 playback from a CD-R, like five years ago. Craziness.

Actually, it is even cooler than you think the different HD codec standards will be able to load up and play whatever is on the disc. We won’t have to go through the DVD+R and –R compatibility crap again. Plus they all look great.

My money will go where the movies go. I don't play video games much, and therefore I only need a machine for playing movies. I agree that APex or someone like them will have a player that is multi-format.

My *theory* is that *IF* the blu-ray consoles hit the market at the 899-999 level which they are rumored to be at......and then Sony comes out with the PS3 in the spring 06' at 299-399....then blu-ray will be a no-brainer. A video game system and movie machine all in one. Cool!!

But in meantime....I hope those Jerkoffs get a finalized format with both technologies in one. I don't WANT to have to get both. Cause' I know I will. I'm such an electronic whore to begin with. I couldn't stand not having both. Just like with these crazy Xbox / PS2 / Gamecube decisions. Simple. Get'em ALL!! :(

.....Or wait for the Apex / Phillips / [insert company here] version to come out that plays both. But that won't be for AWHILE!!

Good points, res. Wasn't the X-Box worth more than the sum of its parts when new?
Who is to say Sony won't take a similar approach with the PlayStation 3 ?
