NEW g-raid looks promising

anyone can feel free to correct me if i'm wrong...

raid 0 means dividing the data amongst several drives so you can read/write quicker. raid 3 is like that but it also makes a backup of all data. what i can't figure out though is how you can only lose 20% of the storage capacity by using raid 3...

regardless, the price point is pretty nice, when it comes time to shop around for that, i will definately be taking a closer look at the tech specs...

nice find! thanks...

It doesn't make a backup of all the data, it stores only parity information.

You divide your data amongst 4 of the 5 drives just you would do with RAID 0. Then you store parity on the 5th drive. Only one drive is redundant of the 5 which is 20%.

Baro and Monday. All good information.

I will dig a little deeper when I have the time. It looks like a fairly well priced solution.

How did you find this website? Have you ordered from them before?
B&H has the same unit for list. There is no way this place will have it for less than 1600 especially a brand new pre order item. I would think long and hard before dealing with this website. Probably a bait and switch deal and you will end up with some crappy raid set up.

I've never ordered from Safe Harbor, but I have heard of them. Then again I just because I've heard of them doesn't make them good or bad since I can't remember. I definitely agree with Boomerang on checking it out. However, B&H is always at list. No deals to be had there for the most part, but they are rock solid so it's the price you pay.

I was a bit shocked at the price as well.

Safe Harbor are good people. I've known them for a number of years. Try to deal with Mary or Jeff Hoffman; they'll take good care of you.

ciao,

Does anyone have the website to check online vendor ratings? I cant remember it off hand, but its useful. I love a deal but would hate to see someone get screwed.

The drive itself looks great, im going to actually order one myself when the HVX gets in.

Thanks Harlan. Not that I dont trust your opinion but I am a new yorker so deep down I just cant reason a 1600 raid for 900. But it does not hurt to call them and get the scoop.

Only 800 GB ? And only FW800 ? Tell me why I wouldn't just buy 2 500 GB G-Raid drives over this. Now if it came w/ 4 slots for drives and two of those were 2 FW 400 drives then it sounds like a great deal because I can just add more space when I need it. I wish there was more product info. Maybe I'm just a crackhead and am not reading it right..

safe harbor is just that. i haven't purchased from them in a while but it was a good experience that last few times i used them.

It's good to know that SH has a few random people that are happy. I'd say that's a good sign. Doesn't hurt to dig deeper, but again it's a good start.

thanks all.

Hi Guys,
How important is 'seek time' and 'buffer' with these drives?
I've been looking at a laCie 1TB FW800 drive that costs 750 USdolls but a friend told me that its seek time at <10ms may be a problem as he has drives that are <3ms but he also said that the buffer of the laCie at 16mb may compensate for slower seek time...... it also has a built in Raid 0 configuration that claims to be faster than normal FW800 devices with its sustained xfer rates of 80 MB/s.

We've had one, two, THREE Lacie drives fail on us here in the last 6 months. Mostly these have been FW drives in the 200-300GB range, so maybe this problem does not extend across their whole product line, but I am very reluctant to recommend anyone buying these products now.

I am not sure if it's the drives themselves or simply the Firewire bus, because you void your warranty if you open the casing to get at the actual drives. We still have two more in operation around here, though, so the next time one fails I plan on cracking it open regardless.

I know a lot of people who have had problems with LaCie drives.

I don't know the details so it could have been user error but I would be careful with these drives.

I just ordered the G-raid Pro from Safe Harbor. The invoice said that it ships within 48 hours, but I didn't think that the drives were released yet.

I will contact them in the next couple of days if I don't get a notice from them. then we'll see how long it is before I get the drive. I don't need it until March, but I'm a chronic early-adopter. :)

I'll post back once I have it up and running.

I ordered mine at around 950 with shipping. By law they are supposed to honor it. We'll see.

The only problem is that G-technology, the manufactuer said mid to late January. For a $600 savings, I'll wait.

G-Technology was supposed to be at the DVexpo...I think.

Yea they were there and I had a look at the thing, looks nice. It's not worth $1500 though for their 640GB Raid+1 setup. I'd rather just by three 500GB g-raid drives at that cost.

Rgd, I agree with you on the pricing issue. Hotswappabable is a really nice option to have and worth paying a bit of money for, but it's moot at this point since I wont be getting the G-Raid Pro now.

I sent my sales rep an email after getting my email receipt for $900+ and then got an email this morning stating that their webmaster had made a HUGE mistake and that the price is actually $1599, but they were willing to give me a $50 discount. BIG WHOOP.

Now, I could probably get nasty, but I just don't have the time. With the internet the whole TRUTH IN ADVERTISING thing has been thrown out the window. I had a receipt for the purchase and it should be honored, but it would be a fight I'm sure.

I do understand an honest mistake and I think it was it's just that in good business the business always eats the mistake and then moves on.

I guess it was too good to be true after all.
