New FS100 System: COMING SOON!

Damn that looks interesting. I'm overwhelmed by the choice of ways to rig this camera. I hope when they bring out the FS200 it's the exact same shape because I hate to think of all the baseplates, topplates and handles suddenly becoming obsolete.

Carlos- what price point are you aiming at with this?
Is it integral to the mount? Or can a handle be separate from the mount connection?

The top, front, and bottom plates create the support structure for all the lens mounts, so yes, its all integrated to get the strength I wanted in the optical path. The top plate has a pattern of threaded holes that could be adapted for your handle - which is quite cool. Pricing will be announced next week both as pieces and as a kit.

OK I think I get it. Lens mount, cheeseplate and handle in one. Solid.
We are modifying to fit other cams right now. Carlos did we work some crews together
in New Orleans in early 2000's? Your name is pretty familiar.

Cheers

Totally possible, I think I've burned about a million feet of film in New Orleans around that time. I owned a rental company in Texas '97-'05 and did a lot work there. Music videos, commercials, NASA, TV shows, all kinds of stuff.

Our handle is an add on, it quick releases from the top cheese plate. The one in the linked photo is the handle intended to be used when you have a big lens and or rig. Obviously the lens arrangement is targeted toward heavier lenses and rough handling like helicopters, boats, and cars. If someone only has a couple of Nikon prime still lenses - it's kind of a waste.

Right I was shooting mostly film then, had XTR rig- we spoke or shot (or smoked) something ;)

When you mention heavy glass and choppers it all starts making sense. Incredible strength there it looks like.
I asked my Sony Rep what the chassis specs were, he never replied. I hear it's SS. You ever get word of what is under the hood? Not that it matters much with that design - you "iron manned" the camera!

I took the FS100 apart completely. The structure surrounding the optical components seems to be reasonable for this type of camera. The weak point is the screws that hold the mount on to the body of the camera. (4) 1.5mm stainless screws. This is very weak. Stainless screws are great for not rusting, but they are brittle compared to high-strength alloys. By comparison, the Alexa PL mount is attached with (I believe) (6) 3mm screws. I took that camera apart a little over over a year ago - it is very strong. That strength requirement is not just to keep the lens from falling off, but it needs to keep the flange perfectly parallel to the sensor at a distance that will vary less than .0005" while under load. This is how ARRI keeps sharp images in the corners even when a big lens and/or big mechanical forces are in play. I have acheived similar rigidity in the FS100 along with a fast way to switch from E, PL, Nikon, and Canon. The iris rids are only used to support the mattebox, follow focus, and lens supports. The sliding base plate supports items like batteries and recorders either directly or on separate rods. This keeps lens changes fast and simple regardless of what type of lens it might be. In our world, faster is better. A solid system that is easy and you don't have to be gentle with is a confidence booster IMHO. Hopefully allowing DP to focus on shooting, NOT rigging and re-rigging all day.

Hello,
What do you guys think?

i really like the cage around the sensor, and i really like Caleb's top handle (and soon handgrip i hope)

Not such a fan of the baseplate / riser block, and would take a pass on that

My perfect form factor is still the XTR, followed slight behind by the ACL...

So Carlos's cage, Caleb's top handle & hand grip..
light weight FF & MB on 15mm rods at the front
Modded Sony HFV2000 viewfinder attached to Caleb's top handle ( this also rules out Carlos's top handle)
Shoulder pad on 15mm rods offset verticaly behind the camera body
recorder and AB batt plate on the end of the rear rods

So yea, i'm interested in the cage and lens support as long as it comes without the riser and top handle

thanks!

That is some great and usable info. I owned an XTRprod so I know what you mean.

The top handle is quick release and optional - don't like it, no need to buy it. The riser serves a critical function - positioning the iris rods 85mm below the center of the lens port. I did not make up that dimension but we have to stick with it if you want your matte box to line up with the lens and support brackets to work. The lens port on FS100's is very close to the bottom of the camera so the only option it to put some space in there. I elected to use the space available for optional mounting brackets as well as the base of the optics support. The red color baseplate is essentially a mini bridge plate that allows slide balancing on a dovetail. If you do not want the dovetail, you can also mount directly to a tripod or an ARRI full size bridge for studio work. The battery and recorder bracket we are making are designed to go onto the dovetails so they do not interfere with the iris rods holding lens related accessories. There is also a dovetail to 15mm bracket if you already have battery mounts that are iris rod based. The top plate serves a dual purpose, mounting anything and EVF support which we will show for the first time next week. In the end, it is very modular and will be sold in pieces so you can mix and match if you wish. I would be super happy to give Caleb the thread layout so we can coordinate his handle working on our cage! Did you look at all the pics or just the one that was linked in the first post?

Interesting product. The more I learn the more I like. stupendous machining here. Carlos I'd be glad to coordinate with this.
Dermot Thanks man! (side grip underway AND a mod for the sony HVF2000 viewer.)

Will it be black?
All the parts will be anodized dark gray, black, and blue. What you have seen is the very first parts being prototyped - raw aluminum. Everything goes through a crazy finishing process and then gets laser engraved. The handle gets a black grip material. Our web site has many updates on this project, we should ship first units in about two weeks or so.

Carlos..

I did go to your website, but only saw the PL mount, missed the cage there, did chk it out ( and "Liked" it) on facebook

i'm attaching two screengrabs from my webcam, it's all i have at work today to snap a piccie with - i'm a "there's a camera in my phone" holdout...

i wanted you to see that i have the vertical rise for the rear rods, and still have the FF & MB in the correct location on the front rods.. i'm holding the VF on with rubber bands until we figure out the electronic's.. i have a AB plate on the rear of the rods, it's with the tech who is making the electronic's work, he's planing on attaching what he needs to the AB plate..

I'm sure i'll get your cage, and find a way to add rear rods at the height i want...

Fortunatly the show i bought the FS for is delayed, so i have a few more weeks to try things out.. so trying them i am!

I'm very pleased that the acc's on offer for the FS are really well made pro kit...

Dermot,

Looks like you lit that with a dedo? Or a Leiko, what else can make an edge that defined?

I like an edge on a light ;)

Not unless you use the projection lens, then it scan get razor sharp. I was thinking this was an HMI dedo which I have not used.
the concentric outer ray is what is throwing me off. Dermott what is that fixture!

;)
