To the guys digging this GH4 footage - sincere question - are you seeing something more than just higher resolution (hacked) GH2/GH3 footage?

You're kidding, right?

I think it's a fair question...

Other than the obviously excellent resolution, I personally see cleaner shadow areas, looks to be better low light, but I still prefer the aesthetic of C100 footage to the GH4 stuff so far. But no ones really done anything in a short film kind of way yet.

We should wait for more samples with people purposefully trying to get shallow DOF, with speedboosters and longer lenses/open apertures. I'm not sure I like the mojo of the GH4 yet, but it's a 1700 dollar camera. It's hard to criticize when the price is that low. I'm still going to shoot more ambitious projects with Epics and Alexas naturally.

What made me hit the preorder button this weekend was when I downloaded some 4K footage, de saturated it, downscaled it to 1080p and graded it to my liking.
It looked fantastic.

And since Im already in the m4/3 system with my bmpcc and previosly GH3, I already have lenses and what not, know my way around the camera and can just charge it and go out shooting straight away.

When you downscaled the footage - did you convert it to a better codec like ProRes?

Yes, I used Prores HQ, mainly because it was there as a preset that I often use. Afterwards I did a final h.264 export (one of my presets for web) and it looked smashing. But when I have the camera I will try all kinds of different codecs and work flows.

I have a hacked GH2, and yeah - I'm seeing more than the camera I own seems to be capable of. The low light - it's just much more clean. Nice detail. The neon fades into shadow without all the muddy noise I'd expect. And this is with a 2.8f ... not a .95 wunderlens.

I wouldn't be budgeting for the GH4 if my hacked GH2 could do this.
