New Flipping Adapter

A phase coating will probably be necessary for the roof section (like in binoculars), but I don't see it as being that much of a problem.

UPDATE: I should have a prototype out soon after the first of the year, hopefully. I plan to build four versions of the adapter: SD Static, SD Static Flipping, HD Vibrating, HD Vibrating Flipping. The GG I'm using right now only loses about a half stop of light or less. I have the plans for the flip unit, but have not got it manufactured yet, so I can't test light loss until I get it. The adapter is in the works. The design is pretty much down. Now, it's just getting all the pieces put together.

how does that work?

it looses half a stop on any apature?

normally there is a curve.

I'm talking about just the GG itself before any light comes through the lens. It loses very little light. And that is just by "eyeballing it", mind you. I have no way to measure it exactly. How could I measure it? Is there a preferred method?

Gave it up. Um, abbe koenig prisms are expensive. could still do it with a RA and roof rather cheaply, but really wanted the abbe koenig.

Alright, based on renewed interest in my adapter design, I have redesigned it with less expensive prisms. Would there be interest in a system like this?

I'd love to do the old one, those prisms cost several thousand... This design could be done a lot cheaper, and of course the savings are passed on to the consumer. The light loss would be less than what one would expect, because prisms (as opposed to mirrors) will be used. Mirrors lose light like crazy and prisms are far more light efficient. I will build a prototype and post my results if people will be interested.

That will not work.. Your pic will still remain fliped upside-down..

I've done tons of R & D and I guarantee you, this will work. I've already built the image erector, thanks, and it does work. Please give a basis for why you don't think it'll work.

Why don't you go with mirrors to make it easier?

Light travels faster through glass than it does through air, which means less light will be lost in a prism as compared to a mirror setup.

Probably those tons were not enought.. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Your sketch using the similar "mirror path" like the SLR viewfinder, with the only difference that you replaced the first mirror in SLR with "mirror prism" ( the first prism on your pic ), and you forgot to add one more reflection on the top side ( see attached pic )..

And speaking of placing th GG.. it would be more clever to locate GG like in SLR viefinder system, because that way you shorten the light lenght ( more compact design ).. but the drawback is that you lose that way posibility to use same GG part in both - filpped and non flipped version..

So: you forgot to add one more reflection..

 Cheers..

David, I don't understand.

The pictures you posted work for the SLR. Are you saying that Kyle's design doesn't work because it doesn't have the setup the SLR does, it's missing a lense? Because what you posted, unless I'm insane, don't those pictures work?

Lens don't make diference..You have lens attached at DOF adapter, too..

If you compare my pics and kayle's sketch; kyle's have only two mirror reflections, and on my ( SLR ) pic you have three mirror reflections..

We have both drawn that one of those reflections is roof type, which mean that flip image from left to right..

Actually I did a test earlier today and the setup does need one more reflective surface to comlete the image reversion. The model I built that worked, I actually used the roof prism from an SLR. So, he's right. I will further revise my design and post my findings. My mistake though leteeci, I do need another surface. I thought my prism was the same as the SLR's I used before.

I have been tru this before. Built one up with a mirror and roof prism from an slr camera. Works fine, except for its size. You really need to make the setup 2 to 3 times bigger in order to get a decent size image off the ground glass. I feel this route to flipping the image is going to

1. cost you a bomb to do and

2. you might end up where you started.

Even P+S uses mirrors in their system. This system if done well, will be different and I guess thats what people want. Something different. But then the cost will be too high as compared with whats in the market right now with flipped adaptor.
