New fixtures: SoftPanels

I know the advantage of the 2x3 and 4x4 is the footprint and the lack of soft-boxes.

But I would still be interested in getting a soft of for when I want to turn that 2x3 to a 5x6 with a soft box...similarly to what one might do with the skypanels. Any word on accessories for these?

A much larger softbox attachment with a light diffusion like 1/2 soft frost or similar would be interesting. My current plan when I want it to be a much larger source is to put it through a large diffusion frame and flag off the spill but a softbox attachment would be very nice.

Update for those who are following this kickstarter.

We received our shipping information survey this morning, so it looks like the lights will be shipping out in the next week or two. I'll try to put together a quick walk-around video when mine comes in for those who will be considering this light when it's available in the fall.

That would be great. I initially signed up for the ks and then got cold feet at the last minute and have regretted not jumping every since. Call it .. non-buyers remorse. :undecided

Me too, for 1x2.

I was in the first 10% of backers... right around the day it reached the $30K goal... so I'm expecting something to happen pretty quick (for all of us) now.

I'm still curious to see photos and to hear what the power draw on these will be.

Wondering if we'll be able to run them off bricks at full power, and for how long. If it's shipping w/both AB and V-mount capabilities, etc... The communication re: those things hasn't been very clear so far.

Same here - very few LED panels can be run off bricks once you get past 1x1.

This was the main reason I got cold feet.... just felt like there wasn't a clear indication on some important details.

You had good intuition. Remains to be seen how the lights will turn out, but the communication and customer support on key details has been poor to non-existent on some items. Several of the backers are ranting about wanting a refund, many folks including myself had sent questions that were never answered or emails that were never replied to.

The update we got on Aug 15th said the lights were still on schedule to be shipped out "mid-August" and now I see from reading the forum that the lights haven't left the factory in China yet. So it would be mid-Sept at the earliest that anyone will receive their order. 4 months behind schedule isn't the issue. The issue is that the communication has been awful.

Hopefully the lights themselves will make up for it.

What? It's all listed on their site. https://www.videolights.com/

1 x 2: 100 watt power draw
2 x 3: 300 watt power draw
3 x 4: 600 watt power draw

Then to figure out how long AB and V-mount batteries last, just do the math. A 100w AB battery should last one hour at full power with the 1 x 2, two 195w AB batteries should last around 1.25 hours at full power on the 2 x 3. The 3 x 4 cannot be run off of batteries.

Any updates on when you guys are getting your panels!?

Who's buying the 3x4? I can see rental houses picking up loads of them.

I'm surprised that it's taken this long for anyone to complain about the communication... The updates have had grammatical errors and been fairly vague on dates... which would be fine if there was a presence or follow-up. IMO it's incredibly strange to get that level of backing... and then be basically MIA after the campaign ends. Personally I've found the phrasing of the updates almost maddening as I read them and just think, why can't they string together a few clear and concise sentences?

I have my fingers crossed that the lights were worth it, but wow... what a perfect way to lay a foundation of doubt. Already it seems that each time an update was given, it was after a few concerns expressed on the forum page... and after one update is vague and misses an already given date, you wouldn't expect the next one to do the same... and the next, etc.

This past spring B&H had a special on an Astra Soft w/ Bluetooth for $1320. In theory one of these 1x2 should be AT LEAST 2x as bright, but I gotta' say... I'd be more comfortable (at this point) with one of those (if that were still the price).

I half-expect that any of us who are feeling annoyed and impatient will be forgiving everything as we get something amazing... but I am concerned that the communication to the people who put up almost half a million bucks... (I mean... really?) has been so incoherent.

Agreed. For 400k, there's enough there to take a few moments and provide transparency about the process. We still don't have photos, which were promised weeks ago. If the lights are truly finished and this amazing, why can't someone take a cell phone and snap a few images? Why are all the questions about battery plates going unanswered?

I normally don't back KS projects because I've had these issues in the past. I backed this one because of the names behind it.

I'm with you, hope the final product is worth it. As of now, wishing I'd simply bought 2X Astras instead. Yes, they are more money but if I have a problem, there's a real customer service dept willing to answer.

Surely the ex-LitePanels guys knew what they were getting into re manufacturing obstacles. I hope you guys get your products soon enough.

Update for those following this thread.

Lights are now supposedly shipping starting the 3rd week of September. No additional reason given for the delay other than "fine tuning."

I'll be happy if we get these things before October at this point.

I see nothing new on their web site either...other than shipping 9/15. I truly hope the lights themselves don't disappoint...am still hoping to purchase.

I have yet to back a Kickstarter product that didn't over-promise and under-deliver. The main reason I backed this one was because of the success and good reviews of the Veydra primes project created by Ryan Avery. But it looks like he wasn't involved in this at all. So...

I have an order in for a 3x4 as I see that as a unique and useful tool. I used the Cineo Quantum earlier this year and liked what it did. Biggest concern is weight--the Softpanels is a good 10 lbs lighter but still a bit brutish to manage. Will probably store it at a rental house.

The deadline and communication thing doesn't bother me particularly. I've seen how these things go, I didn't bank on their projected date. It'll come when it comes, and if it doesn't impress, I'll cash out.
