FS7: New firmware

When does the new firmware come out?

The magenta tint and true 4k have been on my wish list a long time now.

Supposed to be "end of march". I'm sure as soon as it is released, there will be a 50 page thread about it within 30 minutes!

That I knew. I just thought that since we are in the last week of March someone might have heard a date by now. I'm trying to time it with a project.

Those who know cant tell. Those who speculate dont know.

Ned

As one of the speculators, I would speculate either March 27th, March 30th, or March 31st. That's on the idea that Sony likely wants to keep it's "First Quarter" promise, and those are the last Friday, last Monday, and last day of Q1, calendar year 2015.

Although, I personally think it would be hilarious if they release the new firmware on April 1st.

Put me in the camp of "I rather it be right than on time".

Y'all take care,
Robert

I'd rather it be right too. But I have an aversion to changing firmware in the middle of a project.

Done.

I have to say it doesn't feel any different.
Besides the new 4k formats and the new 3rd and 4th audio channel
nothing seems to have changed.

I really can't feel a more responsive behaviour of the menu either.
It's sluggish and slow as before (but I rememeber it being faster, when I installed
the V1.1 first).
The WB thing was never really an issue for me as I use CineEI or custom WB.
So can't tell any news here.

Waiting for the next version (and center crop!!!). :(

Honestly, I don't think that they add any new functions before Canon shows up with
their Version of the C300.

Nevertheless, I love the FS7 for what it is. But I had high hopes in future firmware
updates for this camera though.

On the positive side is 4k recording and the extra two channels of audio which makes it possible to use both XLR and the internal microphone without any Sony add-ons.

After being delayed that long and heaving read about the
forthcoming crop mode, that was mentioned by Sony, this
firmware is a typical Sony thing.

Disappointing in every aspect.

As much, as I like the camera, I regret having bought another
Sony product. Instead of developing one product up to a real
working product, they'll collect user experience and save that for the
next camera being released...

lots of disgruntled folks over on the Sony forum. Most everybody is very pissed off the update doesn fully address the known issues. In fact some say it adds undue issues.
But audio seems to have been upgraded to allow access the ch3+4 but no mention about ProRes or raw via the adapter.
Gonna wait until Doug Jenson does the update and see what he says.
But like a phone update, do it know or do it later but you will do it I reckon.

I'm going to wait a couple weeks before updating my firmware, see if there are any complaints or bugs. I at least know what to expect with the 1.1 firmware.

I downloaded it but am on the fence at the moment. I'm between shoots so now would be as good a time as any though.

I'm really disappointed in Sony here. I've been a big proponent and defender of this camera as I really do think it offers a great feature set and image but to not have completely fixed the magenta bug and shutter issue bug is just amateur. These are major bugs and need to be fixed ASAP. Unlike certain LUT restrictions which are hardware based these two fixes are clearly firmware based and had been mentioned many times by many people through official Sony channels. I must conclude that Sony just don't care about user feedback and the user experience. I don't see the point to having an official Sony forum where Juan reads and takes feedback if it doesn't go anywhere. I'd rather be completely ignored than given the false idea that your feedback matters and Sony is listening.

A lot of whining but I don't know if it's justified. True 4k promised and delivered. Magenta tint fix promised and my initial brief test didn't show magenta. I'll test more. Four audio channels promised and delivered.

The shutter angle, meh. There are more fraction settings than angle settings anyway and its not an issue using fraction settings... so why are you using angles?

It may not be perfect, but hey none of us are perfect either. I'm counting it as a win. Especially as further updates are expected.

Until now it felt that the firmware 2.0 release was late but now I think it actually came few days too early - it is not April Fools' Day yet!

One could look at it from a bigger perspective. Sony promised 4K and Prores support so these must have been on top of their list. Then comes other planned features and the possibility to extend the cameras functions should a competing camera pop up. Then comes issues that can and can not be fixed. So from Sonys perspective bugs or irrational behaviour comes way after features that are planned or that can make them sell more FS7 cameras. But they must have sold every camera they've produced so far so to boost sales might not be a primary concern.

From a user perspective bugs and irrational behaviour have top priority but that's another thing altogether.

Let's wait, if Juan Martinez responds to these complaints over at the Sony forum.

If he doesn't - we need to go offense now.

I like the camera - don't get me wrong. But this is really insane.
I did the update and I really don't see any "issue" being solved here.

I worked with some Sony guy mailing him our issue list frequently.
He confirmed, that they are aware of all these issues and will work
on these for the next firmware update. But he did never really promise,
that these things will be sorted out (I read the mail again carefully).

But what they did now, I really don't get it...

FYI:
I discovered, that WFM is always possible via HDMi out (SDi maybe).
So please don't say processing power is missing for that.
