New Firmware – Focus Ring Drive Sensitivity Fix

So, hello everyone. I had checked out of the forum after having returned my 200 back in March due to the manual focus ring bug.

After several back and forths with engineering and the factory that continued through May, in which I received firmware and a demo unit to test and comment on, I just assumed that an update including the fix would have been released by now. Imagine my surprise at the serendipity and synchrony of checking the firmware site for the first time in months only to find a new release (v1.81) dated today that features the fix. That's just crazy... SMH.

Enjoy.

Perhaps it's a sign that I should repurchase a 200... or wait until November to try the UX180.

Thought I would add the update notes here just so everyone can see what all is in the update:

Ver. 1.81-
  1. Improvement to sensitivity of focus ring. "Focus Ring Drive" menu is added. SPEED / COARSE / FINE / FINE(WIDE)
  2. NR control function is added to the menu.
Recommended value: 0 (Initial value) to -2
  3. The number of times of pressing the jog is added to the hour meter display.
  4. Upper limit of the camera number that can be set is raised up to 17 from 10.
  5. While image quality adjustment menu is being operated, displayed GUIs obstruct the picture on the screen so that it is difficult to see it. This problem is improved.
  6. If a 24.00p/23.98p recorded clip is more than 99 min and 26 sec long, it cannot be played on QuickTime for Windows. This issue is improved. Accordingly, please also update AG-DVX200 camera to be used for this clip.
  7. < only on AG-DVX200MC model >
There is phenomenon where the flesh color becomes yellowish under indoor fluorescent lighting. By initializing the menu, Scene File 4 will be replaced with an improved Scene File.
[ AG-DVX200MC only ] Please initialize the following menu after updating to Ver.1.81-00-0.00.
    Menu: INITIAL SET > SCENE

UX180 will not be the same camera as the DVX200. If it's just the form you're looking at, that might be alright...but DVX200 has a larger sensor and is generally more capable of more types of jobs. If a 1" sensor is best for you, then go for it. Seeing this new firmware, by the way, puts a smile on my face. NR control function? Noise Reduction? And, absolutely, the focus ring sensitivity improvements. I can't wait to test the 1.81 firmware.

thanks a lot for posting this fw update.
I will install it today and test it out. I'm happy to see that finally we can set the NR level. I hope this will solve the ghosting issue.

I can happily report that ghosting is gone if you set the NR level at -3 or below.

Not quite understanding the NR setting mentioned in the Release notes, can someone explain this, What should the setting be, I know it can be a varible, but what would the general setting be,0?

Got to love Panny for keeping us up to date!

Finally! Problem addressed and problem resolved. I felt like Michelle Pfeiffer in What Lies Beneath for a year or so! Yes, the ghosting is there and setting the NR to -3 or -4 more or less gets rid of it. And now I can use V-Log without worrying about it! More scientific tests to come, but damn, Panasonic sure do listen!

7DDude, the camera applies it's own noise reduction, so the general setting is at 0 because that's it's default. Now we finally have some control over it.

Just curious, Does that mean by setting it to -3 or -4 that we will see more grain as opposed to the default setting of 0? Has everyone experienced this ghosting when shooting V-Log?

There should be more grain there, but I haven't noticed it so much. I'll do a field test tomorrow. V-Log was where it showed up the most for me, being that blacks become grey so it's easier to see, but I saw it anytime I was shooting in a low light or high contrast situation. Did a quick test today and saw a big difference. Another welcome side effect - we might be able to get more detail now.
