I recently ran into a friend that happens to be very high up in Apple. We got to talkin' and I had the opportunity to ask him what the hold up is on the new version of Final Cut.
Essentially, he told me that the port from PowerPC to intel turned out to be extremely difficult for the Final Cut team. They originally wanted to have it done much sooner, but the transition ended up taking over a year to rewrite all the code. Once they finished the port (which is known as Final Cut Pro Universal) they didn't get enough accomplished on the new version of Final Cut to warrant an NAB release.
He wouldn't mention when the next upgrade would be for fear of losing his job, but he did say that the marriage between P2 and the new Final Cut is fantastic. He said Apple exclusively uses Panasonic video devices internally and uses DVCPro50 for ALL their logging for the iTunes music store. When I asked him about MXF files, he said not to worry and that the new Final Cut should make P2 users very, very happy.
I expect we'll see the new Final Cut update at the World Wide Developers Conference during the second week of August. If not then, who knows? WWDC seems a safe bet since Apple will also be introducing the new OS there. There is talk FCP might be released on May 19th at the opening of the Manattan Apple store, but I think that is unlikely considering that date falls so close to NAB.
