I attended an industry event last Saturday at Fisher. Among the many exhibitors was Birns & Sawyer with a new line of fresnel lights called Film Gear. Lighting division manager (and Super Gaffer) Mike Rogers, indicated that B&S will be the exclusive distributors for the line.
These babies are really well engineered and manufactured. Details like the way the yoke attaches to the lamp housing and the flip up clamp on the lens door assembly are nicely thought out.
It's obvious that someone who actually uses these things on set had input on the design.
I saw 150, 300, 650 and 2k units at the booth. I believe that the 300 (the one I'll be getting first) has a price of $265 with the 4 way doors. And, the doors aren't just pop-riveted onto the frame...they're attached with screws so that you can adjust them as they wear in.
Don't know the prices on the other wattages as the lights are not up on their website yet, but when I get a free afternoon, I'm definitely gonna pop over to the lighting division to demo them in more detail.
B&S has been around for over 1/2 a century and actually manufacture a line of film/video accessories. I figure if they put something in their rental division, they expect it to last.
NOTE: No, I don't work for them, but I have been a customer for more years than I care to remember.
Anyway, hope this helps those of you looking for an option to expand/upgrade you lighting kit.
