New feature by Ed Burns shot on 5D for $9K - NEWLYWEDS

The "poor man's Woody Allen" has created a good film. It's a good story. My one minor quibble has to do with the jump cuts outside of the confessionals. There are a lot of them and that's not a problem given the doc style. However, frequently there is a sense of perfect continuity in time based on what a character is saying. There is no "jump" in what one would expect the person to say next.

This was frequently done in "The Shield" when the jump cut was to an extreme close up. It was a dependable narrative tool in the show that I thought gave viewers unspoken commentary. This happens in "The Newlyweds" too. It was used well when Marsha tells Linda to change the bed sheets. However, this is an exception to what in my opinion is a mostly mishandled tool in this film.

I couldn't find the link, could someone please post it here? I really want to see it. :Drogar-Shock(DBG):

If you go on the itunes store and click on podcasts..then put Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith in the search box on the upper right..it should pop up..from there it is a free download.

Gotta admit, I was actually really impressed with this film. Quite surprised, because the trailer made it look like a bad YouTube short. Burns has got his game, though, and along with the podcast and other material, this worked to inspire me very much.

I saw the trailer to this and thought it 'looked' like a movie and it seemed good enough of a story.

Got my DVD of this today. Unfortunately Burns didn't do a commentary and I've known this for a while. I keep bugging him on Twitter to record one for download or something which he's said is possible. I hope he does, the Nice Guy Johnny commentary should be required for low-budget indie filmmakers...lots of good info.

My question is, would someone who is not already a celebrity be able to make the same film for the same budget? I have my doubts.

Well he did it for $9k SHOT...not post-prod or whatever else. They spent more like 125-150 on it by then which even I know is too high. I could help him cut some costs lol.

Someone who's not him could definitely do this movie the same way. You would have to know some actors which many here do and have to know enough people with locations to give to you for free, which most of these were just friends places, the actors homes, or restaurants where they filmed while the business was active and selling food.

You don't have to be Ed Burns to do what he did with Newlyweds (production wise).

Gotta be honest, I found the 13-and-a-half-minute Ron Paul ad preceding the YT trailer more interesting than the trailer itself.

EDIT: Kudos, of course, to Burns for the achievement. It would just be better if the film didn't look boring... :undecided

I pretty much agree with this. Kudos on making a low budget movie with a 5D, hope to see more of that. But this movie isn't made for me. It's not what I find entertaining.
