New feature by Ed Burns shot on 5D for $9K - NEWLYWEDS

Rented it the moment it came out on iTunes. It was only $3.99 at the time then within hours went to $6.99 :/ I was only 20 minutes in when I first thought "Wow, this is actually very good." That thought came back more then once. I've followed Burns for a while now, and have listened to every interview and such I can get my hands on. His DVD Commentaries are also top notch and very fun to listen to. Some might think he's a hack, but I think he's doing quite well for himself.

The film felt very real to me which is why I enjoyed it so much. It was pretty raunchy in places, not my cup of tea, but I was watching more for the spirit of how it was made to see the result and I look forward to the DVD Commentary already on pre-order.

Definitely could've used a few more 5D accessories that wouldn't have caused them any trouble on the streets, like a simple monopod or support device attached to Will Rexer's belt or something, just to give it a little bit more support for less shakes, and also a Zacuto Z-Finder could've helped a lot in certain shots, but...it it what it is.

In a world where everyone is whining about this equipment or that, or what technique is superior to another...Ed Burns is just making his movies...and making good profit while he does it. It's given me more of a kick in the pants to get feature #2 out the door :)

Oh also, I've read everything I can about the production, but the nearly 2 hour interview with Jeff Goldsmith on iTunes is the best out there. It's packed with information and a great resource if you want to know why Burns is doing what he is, and how from the script, lack of pre-production, to recording ADR on iPhones, and everything in-between.

The one thing I think he could honestly cut a lot is his post-production budget. If he did a bit more in-house he'd save a lot more. They did a one day DI/Grade for the film, and they totally could've done that at their place with a decent monitor.

Ed Burns was just on Morning Joe (MSNBC) saying he got the 5D MKII at B&H for $2,500 but did not mention any lenses or other gear.

Good for him.

3 man crew! 12 days to shoot a feature!

So true that.

I find it interesting that BROTHERS, shot on 16mm for $25K, looks inferior to this 5d effort. Shows how the game is changing.

Well, it could also show that Burns & co and those involved are better at filmmaking now, compared to the mid-90s.

Three primes they bought while they were at B&H to get the 5D...35, 50, 85 I believe. Also no other gear was used on-camera. His DP held it handheld most of the time. No zacuto z-finder, no support systems, etc. Pretty much just bought the camera and shot their first scene that afternoon.

Gotta be honest, I found the 13-and-a-half-minute Ron Paul ad preceding the YT trailer more interesting than the trailer itself.

EDIT: Kudos, of course, to Burns for the achievement. It would just be better if the film didn't look boring... :undecided

Hey guys, go on itunes and download this podcast for free..."The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith..Edward Burns~Newlyweds Q&A"...its over 2 hours of Ed basically describing the process of making this movie and his philosophy of getting back to basics. He talks about how he had a small crew who multi-tasked on everything...it is very inspiring.

i find it hard to believe there weren't a lot of hidden costs that aren't mentioned or were overlooked... still, the hidden costs on a $9k feature mean it was still incredibly, ridiculously cheap. pretty awesome.

I can't wait for the day when people don't give a s*** what the budget of a movie was but simply how good it is.

No budget for set design, wardrobe, makeup, anything like that? Gas money?

No...actors wore own clothes, did own makeup (if they wore any), etc. No sets, just real locations they got for free. $125,000 or so is the estimated final budget which to me is too high (not meaning they didn't spend that, but that they didn't need to). I know they could've come in lower then that after mix, score, color correction, etc. Many guys here on this forum could do a lot of what they paid for in house and come in much cheaper.

Even so, they're going to make a good chunk of change off the project, so even that 125k is a good landing point.
