EVA1: New EVA1 footage is here

I think Robert Mueller should start looking into Mitch.

You guys think I'm some kind of puppet master here? I've never met Noel and he's literally on the other side of the planet. What I do know is that he's a working DP who got hired onto a few gigs in a row so he's busy. For those of us who have worked at a certain level of freelance shooting, we know that you grab the job and then you basically are either working that shoot or asleep 24/7. Give the guy a break, he's busy and no one is paying him for this. Man's gotta eat.

Strattos is correct. We all work in video here, don't we? I think it's a fair assumption that a completed video should have been uploaded to Vimeo or YouTube prior to release weeks ago and set to unlisted or private. It takes less than 60 seconds to flip the switch on that after a presentation. I understand busy as much as the next guy, but even if not, being too busy to click "public" or upload for well over a week past a VERY specific launch time, and then going dark from the thread, is bizarre.

And that's happen twice now.

While that is all fine and well, I think follow up questions are more than fair.

All respect to Noel! Many are anxious to see further footage from the EVA-1, and the last month has admittedly been a rocky journey in that regards. Any anticipation should be seen from Panasonic & company as flattery -
after all, having excited customers mark their calendars for a footage release is hardly something to frown upon!!

Ask questions all you want, but that doesn't make the guy any less busy on other things. Let me reiterate that this is Noel's footage, not Panasonic's. And it isn't just a few shots strung together. I'm sure he wants to edit together some form of presentation. Plus he said he shot V-Log/V-Gamut, which means there needs to be a color correct session of some form. I know that there was a presentation of some form in Australia, but the material may be edited together differently considering that this is now going to go out on the web as a finished package as opposed to content within a presentation.

I'm just as eager as all of you to see Noel's finished piece.

Noisey...

Noah pointed out that he was using the camera in one of our reseller's booths (less crowded than the Panasonic booth) and that camera had a Canon 24-105 T4 zoom on it. So it was pretty slow with lousy lighting in the convention hall. Most of this was gained way up s that was the testing that he was doing. Gain up any camera and you'll see noise. Later Noah came to the Panasonic booth and spent some time with an EVA1 that had a Sigma 18-35 T2 on it, but I have not seen any of that footage published. In fact I don't know if he recorded anything there (I invited him to).

Noel's stills, noisy, launch film, noisy. Noel himself, quiet. Mitch, also quiet. This thing hits the shops in a week or so...

Noel working.
Mitch also working. Like, getting the EVA1 launched working. Manning trade shows working. Product Managing both EVA1 as well as all the VariCams working.

Sorry I don't have time to chime in on this forum every day. sometimes I'm too busy and it's faster to comment on Facebook & Twitter (I'm on those every day). With DVXuser I have to carve out a block of time because I need to go through all the relevant threads and posts before logging out, otherwise I will miss something.

I envy Mitch and pity him at the same time. He gets to work with the latest and greatest, surrounded by a cinematographer's vivid dream of mega-cameras...and then he has to deal with the daily push and pull of the retail marketplace. The engineers and creative types that work on the latest and greatest are always in conflict with the bean counters. And guess who signs the checks?

You know how this works Mitch. Footage gets posted, we comment. Footage doesn't get posted, we comment. It's an internet forum...

Noel made a big fanfare with his opening post and failed to deliver. I think it's fair that we comment here. I also think it's fair to comment on the noise I see in the posted stills and the trade show footage. Does this mean I have made my mind up about this camera, of course not, I'm a professional and wouldn't pass judgement until I'd tested the camera properly myself. That won't stop me commenting though.

I'm working too BTW, location shoot working. Non-stop location shoot working...

I think the footage looks good, just check it out the skin tones, it's wonderful. I just want to know if "one push autofocus" works, because I don't like to manually focus on EVA1.

Maybe it's my monitor or maybe it's the early firmware, but while the exteriors look OK I see a pretty heavy magenta cast, very noticeable in underexposed areas in the 800ISO exercise sequences, some of those shots look noisy and flat to me too. I still think this camera has a lot of promise though...

I just went in on a C200, so take my impressions with a grain of salt. I like the light weight of the EVA-1. Looks to be much lighter than the C200 which can be a struggle at times to use handheld. But I'd question the EVA-1's utility in run and gun situations. Without a solid AF and no viewfinder, how would one really nail focus in that situation? Maybe they have good AF, but no one has seen it. No doubt people with throw a viewfinder on this, but then you lose the lean format and are forced to rig up a shoulder-mount arrangement.

The grain I'm seeing at 2500 ISO on the EVA-1 looks comparable to grain at around 5000 ISO on the C200 to my eye. It's not bad looking grain, but I'd expect better at a "base" ISO. One wonders at 8000 ISO (which I'm forced to use occasionally) what sort of noise you'd have.

Quite a lot of noise at 2500 ISO. Looks like my C100 at 4000-5000 ISO. Can't wait to see more footage because I am still considering this camera to replace my C100.
