Hello,

Im buyingnew euipment to shoot an indie film, and wanted to ask someone that may know a little more than i do if Im making the right choices. For editing the film and im getting a G5 dual 2.7 with final cut pro which should give me everything I need as far as production and as far as the camera , can someone direct me or tell me which one to get to get the closest to a film look under 10000$ . Based on what ive been reading im gearing more towards the new Panasonic everyone is raving about or should I go with Sony?? Id appreciate any info someone can shoot my way.

lol, You should go with the Dvx100A $3000, or, you can wait and get the HVX which costs $6000.

I'd recommend the Dvx100a personally, specially for beginners working with professional cameras. But the hvx I heard will have better image, and better feautures

Hi Julie,

and welcome to wonderful world of filmmaking - there is nothing more reward or painful :)

If you go with final cut make sure it's the latest HD version.

On cameras, 10,000 will go quickly. Personaly I'm waiting for the HVX200, as are many folks on this site. It depends on how fast you a camera, because it looks like it may be 06 before it comes out.

I would stay away from the Sony for sure, though you can get one of those used for way below what a JVC or HVX will cost. But ask yourself why it is you can get those used for so cheap when they've been on the market for such a short time. That says everything.

The JVC looks to be a great camera, but you may need to change the lens, depending on the shots you wish to aquire, no static rack focus shots possible because that lens breathes way too much. Although the camera has wonderful features, there are no low cost lens options out for it - which is why I'm waiting for the HVX.

I can tell you I intend to shoot my feature on the Panasonic HVX200 with century wide angle lens, or possible get the micro35 kit people on this site are talking about, along with some prime lenses.

I already have a lot of gear and extras though. If you don't, then the 10k will fly away before you know it.

Are you going to be DP or director? In all honesty, you might be better off getting a DP that already has the equipment. Many DPs will work for very cheap if they like the project, even possibly free for a feature credit.

best of luck

Thanks for the info, well to be honest Im actually in film school now, and Im learning final cut pro and the first thing Im getting it the apple, as far as the camera I want something that will give the me the closest thing to film like look. It seems Ill have to wait for the HVX200 as well, but isnt it available yet? Its on the Panasonic site? EIther way as I said the computer for me is the first priority and it seems thats gonna run me 10000 alone with the 2.7 and 2 23" cinema screens ( something I was unsure was should i get the 2 screens or edit on 1 it seems the 30" is a little big and I think u get much more room and better res on 2 separate screens) But based on the the stuff Ive read I think having the apple with final studio pro will be as close as Ill get to have a functional studio of my own, Im just hoping my euipment wont be obsolete in 3 years :)

And why is the no footage at all of this HVX200 you expect there would be at least something out there released by Panasonic

everything will be obsolete in 3 years! that's a lifetime in the tech world. hell, that's longer than most Hollywood marraiges :)

patience grasshopper, the HVX200 clips will come in due time, and I'm sure they'll be worth the wait.
