Software maker DXO has introduced a new 1" camera that physically attaches to iPhones and iPads via the Lightning port, unlike the Sony Q cameras that connect wirelessly.

Personally, I find the ONE to be meh and too expensive, though I like the concept.

But more significantly, at least to us on this forum, it answers a long-held question: Can video be fed to iOS devices via cable? YES!!!

Now, I don't know any of the specifics, like what API is used, limits of the display, etc., but I'd think this would be a great avenue to explore for some intrepid camera accessory designer! Maybe a little box with HDMI in / Lightning out?

I've still got my old 5S sitting around waiting to be put to work...

you are so right....the idea to pair an iPhone/ipad with a capture device is such an obvious one but somehow totally underused....the sony solutions look ok, but the direct connection is key IMO....i would prefer a cable or at least the option of a cable, but either way, the options are limitless....
iPhones/ipad are getting so much more powerful each year but you can only get too much optical quality out of 1/4 inch thickness....

It could provide a decent monitor if the frame rate is high enough. Might even force it to record proxy files into the phone, but without an SD card storage would be a problem. Might be good for grabbing production stills to help continuity between takes (was the object in the right hand or left hand???)

The problem, as I see it, is that, once you got this camera, why do you need the iPhone?

IMO, it's easier to add WiFi to a camera and keep improving the photo/video features of smartphones than to go this tack-on route.

I might make an exception had the external cam been much, much smaller, something closer to the matchbook size.

Yeah, as I mentioned, I'm not into the camera at all, but the revelation that video can be fed to an iPad or iPhone. Many of us own these devices already with their powerful brains. How great would it be to have the option of using a small or large display? Now the question is whether their displays are good enough and can be calibrated?

That SmallHD 502 is designed to be the size of an iPhone, but undoubtedly doesn't have Apple's massive manufacturing prowess behind it.

The tab that inserts into the iPhone looks really super strong. Like I don't think anyone's going to do anything that would break that plug right off - thus screwing both the camera and the iPhone. Nah, no one will do that.

Yikes!
