New DVX100A malfunctioned with first use...Help!

Hi,

I just bought a DVX100A not too long ago and besides powering it up, I haven't used it.

Today I was doing a walkthrough with it for a shoot and was going to shoot some test footage. I had a tape in the camera (a panasonic MQ) and it kept shutting off with the automatically, so I changed the settings in Tape Protect from power off to standby.

Well, about five minutes a click came from the camera and I assume it went into standby. But the red camera light on the back started blinking and the screen went to black (but was still illuminated).

I turned the camera off and on again, but nothing happened. The light kept blinking and even though the screen lit up no picture came through and no info came up on the display.

I took the tape out and this caused the light to stop blinking, but nothing else happened and none of the buttons were responsive (except I could switch the camera from camera to VCR mode on the back).

I tried everything, including switching the batteries, plugging it in, turnning it off and waiting a while, and pressing the reset button. Nothing has worked.

Now, I should add that I purchased the camera from a reputable, authorized dealer and I'm, of course well withing the warranty.

However, sending back a product is always a pain, so I wanted to just check and see if maybe someone else has had this problem and knows of an easy solution (I know it's probably just defective, but I thought I'd give it a shot).

Yes, I've tried everything, besides smashing it to the ground and banging my head against the wall, although I'm close to that.

I noticed that the manual states that the DVX won't function if condensation has built up inside it. I highly doubt that's what happened, but does anyone know how the camera acts when condensation does build up?

Well i haven't had that problem with the DVX. However with other cameras it will give you an condensation error message of some kind. but again, never had that happen with the DVX. Where were you shooting? What kind of environment?

Inside. In an air-conditioned house. Also, it's really not that humid here and the were no error messages on the display.

It's kind of cool that the DVX100 has some sort of humidity sensor or something if can tell you that there's too much condensation.

Hey
It sounds bad, Id give the place where you bought it a call. Say you want a working camera in place of the one you already have.

Onamission, take a paper clip, open it up and stick it in the reset button. Reset the camera and when you put the tape in do it gently and slow. Your camera should start working. If it doesn't, indicate whats going on. I had the same problem after having the DVX for 2 years and I had to reset it. I'm surprised that this happened to a new camera. Keep the power on standby - ALWAYS.

EVen the humidity warning blinks on your viewfinder/LCD. If you see NOTHING at all, check simple things first.

Is your battery charged? Is it defective? Sometimes new batteries take a few cycles before they corrcetly hold a charge.
Does camera work with AC adapter instead of battery?
Do you have red light on back of camera (not on handle, the lower one that shows power)?
Is the lens cap off?
Is the ND filter off?
Have you accidentally shut off the LCD (or something else) while fooling with settings?
If you shut LCD, do you see anything in EVF?
Can you reset everything to factory defaults?
Remove and replace battery?

It is LIKELY something simple.
