New DVX100 (well the updated version)

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

Thats just the thing you wanna hear when you just bought a DVX on the same day ;)

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

lol.. damn technology. Happens to me all the time.

Good thing is it looks like the improvements are more for the point and shoot croud, If your making movies it shouldnt affect you much. Oh, well the new cine gamma and knee settings might... oh boy...

Regardless... mums the word on the camera still so who knows it could be a big hoax.

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

It is weird that I can't find any "official" Panasonic information on the "A". In the description on the "expandore" site it doesn't mention native 16x9 (as rumoured), just "squeeze" recording mode and then the unclear statement "It is pixel conversion in digital one." I assume they are trying to say that it still has a 4x3 chip and will digitally sample the middle lines and stretch (like PD150 and XL1.)

I did however find this on a Japanese web site (translated to english via Sherlock)
"- Expansion of the progressive automatic photographing functional

The URL that came from is http://www.flippers.jp/note2/C1809295545/

This basically says the same thing, but I think it confirms the use of a 4x3 chip.

I hope Panasonic releases some official info soon.

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

Yes.. the 4x3 chip is it, but remember that the DVX has almost double the pixels as the XL1, so if it does it properly using the effective pixels then pushing that image onto tape in NTSC it may work just as well as using an anamorphic.

Panasonic wont say anything I imagine as they still want to sell the normal DVX100's. However, this could be one of those it released in China in January and here next year sometime..

Hopefully it wont be dragged on like the XL-2.... I wonder if there are still people out there that have waited the last 3 years for the XL-2 to actually come out...

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

I just don't see this happening. The DVX100 is already a solid camera in all areas for the price range. These updates to the still unconfirmed DVX100A are minimal just as the new Sony PD-170. I can't see why Panasonic would want to re-release a camera that is only a year old. I don't think they have any reason to be threatened by Canon or Sony to do so. I certainly wouldn't dump my DVX100 to get the DVX100A, I made that mistake when I sold my XL1 to get an XL1s.

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

I have the same feeling.. I dont get that "damn better sell on ebay" feeling here. Wouldnt it be cool if all it was a firmware update.. that we could buy.. hee hee hee.

remember, alot of the "new features" was on the prototype DVX100 when it first was shown almost 2 years ago, but didnt make it into the production version.

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

I was planning on buying the 16x9 anamorphic glass adapter, but I might save my $$$ now.

The expandore site claims "Zoom Motor Change."
It would be good if the DVX-100A was capable of ease-in and ease-out motorized zooming. I was so happy when I first found out that the zoom ring on the DVX100 was manual, but then I missed the ease in/out of the servo driven XL1 lens. I don't use zooms very much, but when I am asked to do a slight slow push in, I hate the telling the director that it won't look very good. Do the Stealth zoom or Varizoom handle do ease in/out?

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

I guess we'll have some news if it's true or not at Interbee on November 19th. If it is announced, then for once in my life, I'll be able to get the latest and greatest. :D I too have always been in situations where I buy a product, only to find out there is a better one a few weeks later. :'( The only drawback is I'll have to wait until January... That is it it hits the Canadian market by then. :-/

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

Start what? ;D

I'm not thinking about other women.... heu... I mean cameras. Just the lure of a new and improved version of the DVX100! ;)

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

For me, you can't ignore the added value of the slow shutter speeds. These will allow for some great new framerates (like 3 fps, 4 fps, and 6 fps), bringing the total number of supported progressive framerates up to 7... 3, 4, 6, 12, 15, 24, and 30, assuming you aren't afraid of some frame removal. It isn't a varicam, but it isn't too bad either.

The new Varicam gamma is very nice as well.

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

Well, first of all it remains to be seen whether there's truth to the rumors at all, and then secondly whether there's the addition of the slow shutter speeds.

The slow shutter speeds are interesting, but I wonder if they would provide for true full frame capture. On the Sony's, selecting a slow shutter speed means only getting one field's worth of information. If that's the case then slower-than-12fps might not be too useful. But, on the other hand, the Sony doesn't use progressive-scan CCD's in that mode, so maybe the DVX will provide full-res? If so, that's an interesting angle.

About a week and counting...

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

as for canadian market by January.. good luck. I would expect it not to be in canada till April.

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

I went to a demo of the Panasonic SDX900 and talked to a Panasonic rep who wouldn't say anything other than, "Make sure you go to the DV Expo(in LA Dec 9-12)." So I guess there should be an announcement then or even a premiere of something new.

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

I certainly don't see anything in these upgraded stats which will get me to eBay my DVX and go for the A. If anything, it should make getting another DVX a bit easier (that is to say, cheaper) in a few months.

This emoticon is appropos of nothing; I just like it.

Re: New DVX100 (well the updated version)

Let's pretend the announcement is legit -- the 'A' is rumored to carry a retail price of $5000. Maybe a street price of $4200. At least $1000 more than the DVX100, and in all probability the DVX100 would be discontinued and replaced with the 'A'.

So I don't really see room for anyone to be upset -- if the 'A' offered a bunch of upgrades for the same price (or less) then yeah, that'd be really irritating. If it offers more features for a higher price, then that's great -- offers the consumer choice (like buying a PD150 or DSR250 -- you pick your level of features and how much you want to spend).

I think the only people who are going to be disappointed are those who would want to buy the current , but don't have the cash yet, and then wouldn't be able to because it's been replaced by a more expensive . But for those folks, there might be a rebate (or ebay fire-sales from upgraders). So hey, if it turns out to be legit, I guess it's a good thing all around.
