New DVX Wedding Demo

Hey guys. I just uploaded my new wedding demo shot with the DVX. Check it out and tell me what you think. The compression makes it blocky and stuff, so don't mind it.

Talking about the blockiness, I've seen videographers post 6 mb demos that look pretty good on the quality of it. This is like almost 25 mb and is pretty bad. I also noticed that they exported it in windows media player. Can you guys tell me how I should export it? Like what settings? I have Vegas Moviestudio (not the professional version). Thanks!

That was a cool video...some of those shots were really good..but jus a little bit shaky.

but everything else was good.

kudos!

luckyproducer, I really liked your wedding demo. Its pretty much in line with how i would cover a wedding. it was real, it was not overdone, just downright wedding documentary. I love it.

wow i think i know that girl for some reason. Man they getting married young now.

And i think i have watched zombie films way way too much, cause in the first 10 or so seconds when buddy is getting his cufflinks put on I swear to god i thought his skin was falling off and he was a zombie.

That said.. well done. The Hitchcock zoom was pretty cool and the cuts fit perfect. I like how you cut the bridesmades coming down the isle as well. I like the mix in there of the fun stuff too.. good work. Only thing I would change was its a little long, but probally not for those involved.

Sweet dvpixl. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Check out my prices at www.putfile.com/luckyproducer. Let me know if they are good. I need suggestions. Thanks!

Oh, do you know how long I should tell the couple to wait for the DVD to be finished. What is a reasonable amount of time. I try to get it done in 6 weeks but sometimes it's hard, with school, and some of my other responsibilities. What do you think?

hey lucky i think you got your extra prices for DVD's backwards.. shouldn't it be $40 for first copy, then $20 each additional copy?

Thanks Jarred! Awesome review. Few questions...what was the hitchcock zoom? Lol. And the mix of the fun stuff. What fun stuff do you mean? Thanks again!

The Hitchcock zoom is the Vertigo effect.. where you dolly back and zoom in.. give a nutso kinda feeling.

The mix of fun I mean the party afterwards... but you started it right outside the church when they left which was nice.

oh yeh! I love that effect. I saw that effect on The Mask and I always wanted to achieve that. It's pretty cool. But that bride had a serious problem looking down and stuff. Yeh, they are brazilian. they get married early.

what do you think of the time of editing and until I should give them the product. Like, should it be rushed. cuz I remember my sister's wedding pictures took like really really long for her to get it. Lol! Let me know! Thanks!

6 weeks is a little long. I mean I have cut feature length movies and had the sound mixed and ready for delivery in less time than that.. but since your in school, they may understand.

I guess it depends on the place, I've heard of companies in my city that quote over 6month's back log on getting your final tape.

Nice work. Can't add much to all the kudos here. One question: Did you use any kind of stabilization device (harness, glidecam, steady tracker, etc)? The feature was nice and smooth. Good job in a challenging situation.

Im an idiot when it comes to doing weddings but I want to get into it.
I have a few basic questions.

What do you do to advertise to start doing the weddings?
Do you give the people the raw footage of the wedding also, or just the 5 minute cutdown?

I used a shoulder harness but it sorta hurts your back and after a while starts getting hard on stabilizing. I can stabilize better by hand. I think i will start doing that.

To start doing weddings dude, it's all word of mouth. That's how you start man. Start with families, and then they tell other people. Best thing to do is make a demo. Do one wedding and make a demo off that. Give it to people getting married. Charge more than usual so you can leave room to drop the price if they complain. I put one ad at this one store and I got one job from it, but I mostly get jobs from word of mouth. My sister also works at David's Bridal and she always gives out my cards. That's a big help too. The person who cuts my hair owns her barber shop and she will also recommend me. So it's mostly word of mouth. The internet is good as well like I do. Show your demo, prices, and all that.

No, I never give the raw footage of the wedding. I edit the entire footage down to like two DVDs (one for the ceremony, the other for reception). The 5 minute cutdown is part of the massive DVD video. I show it all man. It's a long production. They pay to see it all, not only 5 minutes. But I don't give them the raw footage.

Hope that helps. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Peace!

Good job on the video. I used to produce wedding videos as well.

I would suggest raising your rates. There is so much involved in creating a wedding video that you need to actually make it worth your time and equipment costs. The tough part about doing wedding videos is that most people don't have much budgeted for a video and it can be hard to convince people to invest in it, but I totally think it's worth it. At least try raising your rates another $500. Remember you can always drop it some if they need to work a deal, but you want to build value in the video and your work.

Also, I always quoted in my contract a 6-8 week turn around. And I always explained to my clients that the video would take around 40 hours of post-production and that was why it wasn't turned out so fast. Every client said it was worth the wait.

I've recently moved from part-time video production to full-time wedding photography which was much more beneficial for me, but now I don't have anyone in the Phoenix, AZ area that seems to be producing the same quality wedding videos that I was. Anyone know of someone out here?

Here's a couple samples of the music highlights videos that I included on my finished DVDs:

BTW-My video experience totally helped me when I started photographing weddings. I've always had a different perspective on a wedding coming from the videographer's side and so my photographs have a very different look to them which seems to be working out well.
If anyone is considering jumping into photography I would say to definitely try it! I'm loving having more freedom in my shots as a still photographer and now my DVX is my toy that I used to make 'fun' hobby videos. I'm definitely enjoying my DVX more now!

Good job LuckyProducer and keep producing good wedding videos! It's definitely important to the couple. And word of mouth is a spectacular way to get your best business. If your potential clients are referred to you by a friend of theirs then they will come to you already trusting you for what you do, and most of the time they will be willing to pay for what you are truly worth. As long as you are not killing yourself by giving too many discounts. Remember this is no hobby, it's work and you need to get paid well for the time that it will take you.

God Bless,

Jefferson, your photo's on your slideshow are pretty sweet, I recently photographed my wifes' sisters wedding and enjoyed it, although I lacked the direction need to control a large group, used to just following and shooting video, I've been thinking of getting into phot'o's aswell, what kind of camera do you use?
