New DVX User

Hi all.

This past weekend I picked up my new DVX 100A. As I opened the box I really felt as if I just joined an elite group of users.

With the manual in one hand a a cold beverage in the other, I put my 100A on a tripod and began my DVX journey. Coming from a GL-1 user I knew the technical jump would be rather large..... and it is. I am thrilled with the creative potential this camera offers.... Anyway.....

I shot some test footage of the various video modes and was surprised my the amount of noise present im my image. My gain was set to "L" and all other settings were factory defaults. I noticed this in STD (F1) mode as well as other non 24p modes. I was shooting under mid levels of natural light and kept an eye on my zebras to keep exposure at reasonable levels.

Has anyone else had a similar first experience with the noise?

Also - I from reading posts here last week I understand that as DVX users we must really know the camera and understand the varous settings and how the camera resonds in different lighting conditions. In understand that by upgrading to this camera it will require me to hone my video / technical skills above and beyond what was required while shooting my GL-1. I would appreciate any links that may provide me with more detailed information with what makes this fine piece of technology tick at it's highest, most beautiful level.

I have not run side by side tests of my GL-1 and my 100A. But is it safe to say that this was a very good upgrade from a image and capabilities standpoint?

So glad to call myself a DVX user.

Re: New DVX User

if your shooting with any gain at all, your going to get noise, so if your gain is not set to 0 db at the low setting, you should change it to have no gain on that setting. otherwise if you dont have any gain on , your simply need to shoot in more light.

Welcome to the club, Dave ! 8)

I myself come from the GL-2 and, yes, the technical leap to the DVX is pretty impressive. The manual, IMO, is poorly written, the Enlgish is very awkward and many aspects are simply ignored... Luckily, this forum and the COW one are full of nice and knowledgeable people. I browsed them for a couple of weeks prior to buying the camera and read almost everything. Lots of useful links spring up here and there in the various threads, so keep on reading... and count your blessings because, as a European user, I have to adapt a lot of stuff to the PAL settings, which are quite different from NTSC ! ???

Regarding your noise problem : I've shot footage outdoors, indoors, with good lighting, with extremely poor lighting, in interlaced and progressive modes, and haven't noticed any of the noise you mention. Perhaps you were using an older tape ?

Re: New DVX User

well, you would get noise from an old analog tape, but not digital, you would get whole blocks of messed up data that would be very noticeable, if the tape was an issue. or dropouts, and such, but the digital data wouldnt be messed up on the pixel level to look like nose though.

Re: New DVX User

Thanks for the response guys. the tape I was using was the tape that came with the camera. I appreciate your feedback. I will do some more testing tonight.

Re: New DVX User

Sounds like I may need to verify that my "L" setting is at 0. (assuming that level can be customized)

Re: New DVX User

Just curious.... U mentioned "The Cow" is that another on-line resource? What is the address?

Re: New DVX User

Does the 100a come with a normal tape? Which brand?mine only came with a claening tape! But I have the 100.

Re: New DVX User

100 came w/ the cleaning tape. 100a came w/ the mq 60min tape(no cleaning tape).

Re: New DVX User

cleaning tape is much better to get for free then the MQ tape. I dunno how smart it was to put a MQ in the box, people probally run through that tape pretty fast then goto circuit city to buy more... and start mixing wet and dry lube. Wait. We all know better than that :)

Re: New DVX User

Yeah, that was the one down side of getting the A. I opened up the box and found a regular dv tape (MQ). The thing was I bought a box of regular MQ tapes when I bought the camera. I then had to order the Cleaning tape, which was like $15 (which I still havn't used). :(

Re: New DVX User

I own a pal dvx100a and was amazed to see noise during daylight shooting too. This will occur when you increase the detail setting too high and have it in thick mode. The noise is bad particularly for greens. I find turning the detail down to minus 3 cures the problem. I think the scene file presets are way to high. In standard interlace mode the sharpening is done to the point of halo effects on the edges ! play around with the settings.
I did some wide beach shots yesterday. You wont notice much of a difference from interlace to progressive until you see it side by side and then you say a hah its more detailed and smoother in progressive. For closeup shots I cant tell the difference.

Thanks Elvis! I feel the love! Looking forward to being around a very long time.
