New DVX short!!

Nice shoot! (for you and the kids)

I like the shot when you can see them both in the window!

I actually had fun watching it!
Man, the DVX still looks really amazing!

Nice, that was fun. Very cinematic once you got to the OTS and CU's. It's a good example how if you have nice skin tones and facial exposure, a little overexposure in the background doesn't really matter. Same feelings, the slow motion wasn't doing anything for me.

So, scene settings and techniques. Nice shallow DOF outdoors, was there an adaptor, or just working with ND's and iris?

Thanks a lot you guys, I still love my dvx like I just got it (even though it was 2 years ago now). It was a hotass day fo sho. I didn't use an adapter (just high shutters, ND's, and wide open iris, the same way they shot Iraq in Fragments), and the sound was a rode ntg-2 on boom with 20 feet of xlr right into the dvx. Yea, now that I see it the slow mo gets old, I was just excited that I had 24pa and that choppy filmic slow mo, ya know. I blew out the background because in Rodger Deakins's(DP of all Coen bros. film starting at Hudsucker, with the exception of Burn after Reading) forum he sopke of blown out background show environmental heat. And with both of my actors all sweaty the blown background just reenforced it. I underexposed the little brother because I though it would show he has a darker side than the older brother, but that is probably just a long excuse for he had the sun at his back. ahahaa

Thanks, the acting was just me trying to pace them through the short little script. I see so many student short where everyone overlaps in just regular dialog because they are all over rehearsed. In real life no one has something to say back to anyone the split second they finish a sentence.

I used h.264 size 640x480, 4000 kb/sec, keyframe every 24 frames. I dunno, i think that is everything. I just followed the guidelines that vimeo has finally posted for the best upload quality. I don't know why they didn't do it yeays ago.

General compression guidelines for Vimeo

  • Codec

Choose H.264 for the video codec. Choose AAC for the audio codec.
  • Frame rate

This is usually 29.97 for USA/Japan/Canada, while in Europe and rest of the world it's usually 25. If there is an option that says "current" just go with that. Please note that Vimeo converts all HD videos only up to 25 frames per second in order to optimize playback performance.
  • Keyframes

Every 30 frames. This is basically how often the compressor references your uncompressed video.
  • Data rate

1800 kbits/sec for standard definition 4:3 video , 2500 kbits/sec for widescreen DV, I went with 4000 kbits/sec, or 5000 kbits/sec for high definition. Making these numbers higher will increase both quality and size.
  • Size

640x480 for standard definition 4:3 video, 872x480 for widescreen DV, or 1280x720 for high definition. It is also best to export 1920x1080 or 1440x1080 video as 1280x720 too.
  • Deinterlace

Yes. If you do not deinterlace, you will often get weird-looking horizontal lines in your video.
  • Sound sample rate

    44.100 kHz
  • Audio quality

You want audio with a bit rate of 128 kbps. You can set your audio to really good quality without increasing file size too much.
  • Those are the basic principles that will apply to almost all of the video programs out there. Eugenia, an active member in the Vimeo community, has made some tutorials for specific programs that you can view:

I don't know why they didn't put this up years ago. This should be a sticky.
