New DVCPRO P2 brochure

With all the people bitching about the price I'd forgotten about all the really sweet unique feature with P2-
1. Continuous and Immediate recording (up to eight minute buffer)
2. Immediate retrieval and playback of scenes.
3. Indestructible
4. No capturing (meaning plug-in and the clips can be edited)
I can't wait till this the HVX is released.

yea and prices will eventually come down. Damn, I can't wait to start working in this workflow. I don't really know how much SD footage you can fit on one 8gb card, but at 25MBs you should easily be able to fit an hour on two of them. That's all I really need is to be able to fit an hour in SD for weddings (catholic ceremonies). Of course I can't even afford the camera yet but I'm saving my pennies!

For regular DV or DVCPRO25, you can get 64 minutes on the two P2 cards. Plus, remember you can record an hour of DV at a time to the internal tape drive too.

It woulda been kinda cool if you could do HDV with it too... to tape. Incase you just wanted a quick easy mediocre looking HD documentation of something.

x2mag, why not just shoot DV then?

I think in more ways than one HDV looks worse than normal DV...

So if I get this straight...The only way the HDV can record HD is with the P2 cards? Right? It can not record HD with miniDV Tapes...even though you can use them for SD recording...am I right?

For clarification, you meant "the only way the HVX can record...", right? I'm sure you did, just want to be sure.

The only way the camera by itself can record HD is on the P2 cards, yes. But there will be several alternative recording technologies available that will give you many different ways to record HD, none of which require P2 cards. The P2 cards will be the most rugged, most reliable, most bombproof and most convenient way, but not the longest-lasting or cheapest-per-minute. There will be many alternatives.

Thanks for the clarification Barry...Ok so the camera does not even use mini DV...I thought it did...Ok.

Barry where on this site can I order your book!

Thanks

It has a MiniDV tape mechanism, jerbuds, you just can't record DVCPRO50 or DVCPROHD on it. DVCPRO50 & DVCPROHD must be captured directly to the P2 cards, or to an external recorder/HDD thingamabob.

Harlan is correct. The camera can record miniDV onto its internal tape drive, and it can internally record HD and DV50 (and DV, and DVCPRO25) onto P2 cards. But only miniDV onto the miniDV tape.

As for the book/DVD, the link is in my signature line... ;)

Barry, do you think the HVX is going to be like the DVX in that Panasonic will recommend against using Mini-DV tapes with longer recording time than 60 min. SP (90 min. LP)?

Also: the hour meter on the DVX (according to p. 50 in the manual) measures the total rotational time of the cylinder head. Do you think the HVX meter will likely work this way as well? How could tapeless mode affect this?

Don't know the answers to that. I would expect that since the tape drive is miniDV, it's likely that it would be the same tape drive as used in the DVX. If that's the case, I'm sure the same issues would apply -- i.e., the recommendation against 83-minute tapes, and the counting of rotational time of the cylinder head.

Obviously if there's no tape in the camera (for tapeless operation) the hour meter shouldn't advance.

But, that's all guesses...

And I'd say very good ones. I just wanted you to know I don't even go to my local filmmaker's club anymore for answers to questions, I just come here and interact with people who are light year's ahead. Thanks again for you and everyone else who makes this forum what it is. Thanks also for saving me the 10-mile drive and wasted Sunday afternoons.

BTW, the newest cam that anyone has at my filmmaker's club is a Sony VX1000. None of them had even heard of the DVX and they were absolutely baffled by mine!!:)

Has this been answered before: why couldn't the camera record to DVCPro-HD tape like its big brother, the Varicam? After seeing that the price of an 8 gig P2 card goes for $2000, I can't but help feel like Panasonic struck out.
