Hey All,

Built a new dolly... this is version 1.0 with many enhancements soon to come.
I'm also writing a tutorial and have many pics of how I built it for those interested (which will be available shortly on my site).

Here is the Dolly vid.

Im surprised you did not injure yourself when you did a fast dolly inside :)

Its actually a camera dolly only 2 ft by 3 ft...
it cannot carry a person...
so I just scooted it fast back and forth.

Hey bokser, good footage, I like the slow dolly shots, inside and out, you have a very smooth dolly, you should get a larger track though, I just finished building my 24' track.

Im also curiouse to know how you got that nice greenish style shot outside, it looks really nice, was it on camera adjustments, or post color correction?

I didn't do any camera adjustments for these tests except for white balance and kept it on setting 6
for the outside I pointed it at a white wall
for the inside i had a 3200k preset so I used that
also in post I only adjusted the mids for the inside shot

also Dyrseve989... how are you connecting longer pieces of track together... I have several methods that I've been using but would like to hear your way... and do you get slight bumps over the connected tracks?

I'll say what was said to me the first time I busted out my homemade dolly :INstant production Value!" (Terry Lasater)

What is it about the moving camera? For those of you that have not obtained a dolly; do it. It's worth its weight.

These were some nice test shots and proves your dolly will come in handy.

Basically what I have are 4 12' long, 1" interior diameter metal pipes. I connected them with 2 very long(probably 6') 1" exterior diameter pipes. They slide in perfectly, and I made homemade crossmemmbers and wood stands. I made sure that the wood stands would make the connecting part of the pipes perfetly symetrical, and then I covered the whole pipe(when I setup) with 2 strips of gaffers tape straight across where the wheels make contact, it looks great.

-Matt-

can you show some pics of that rig...
and the tape keeps them from moving apart even with all the dolly movements?

no, the small piping that I slide in two both larger pipes keeps them together and not moving, thats why the small pipes that connect the track is so long(6'). the tape is there to make sure it rides smooth, and it helps when the wheels roll over where the two 12' pipes connect, w/o the tape you can see a small disruption while rolling over the connection, but with the tape, you cant tell.
I will try to get some photos up the next time I set up the track for a shoot, which should be soon

-Matt-

very good looking shots and excellent music too!! lol love that song

my only thing is during the exterior fast shots you can see a slight jerk right when it begins......

Haha! Mike Jooonnness. When the music came on I literally laughed. Nice.

The dolly ain't bad either

Good stuff Bokser. Smooooooooooth. Got any photos of the actual rig?

Yeah, I have a ton of photos of me building it... no paint job just yet... but I will have a tutorial on my site very very soon...
I'll let you guys all know when its up.

Also glad everyone likes the song... I though it was appropriate for a scene where we see bicycles with flat tires. :)

and coffee... yes there was a jerk... but that was me just seeing what this puppy can handle... and I was surprised there was only a jerk in the beginning and no other jerks (except at starts and stops... ) so I was pretty happy with it.

does your dolly support your weight? the one I built does not support mine, but....well we'll just leave it at that. anyways, after messing around with my dolly I decided that it would be advantageous to have your dolly support your camera's and your weight...yup.

No this dolly was meant to only support the camera, tripod, etc... no people...
I actually also build a dolly to support a person (but not the vid you just saw)... but a small dolly like this (2ft by 3ft and I also build a 12 inch square) is very beneficial...
its lighter and fits in more tighter spots.

I found somewhere online where a tracked dolly system was built and mounted onto an iron board. it's really cool and meant for really tight places.
