New DIY Camera Slider

About two months ago I ordered a demo rail from PBC Linear for a camera slider. They let me test a new version and it worked great! It's just like an IGUS rail, except it's square rails, and the carriage portion is only one piece!

Long story short, they just launched the product today. It's even better than the one I tested, they call it a Low Profile Uni-Guide. I was going to start making them and selling them, but there's just too many people doing it already, so I thought I'd share this. The best part is the new one they have comes with an optional brake nob/handle thing.

Let me know what you guys think?

Have I seen you on the HV20 forum?

yeah, I tried to post there yesterday, but it wouldn't let me. My friend Art told me about these forums, I help him shoot some weddings and setups for senior pictures. He had me make him an IGUS slider about a year ago, then I sold 3 of them after some of his competition saw what he was using.

I maintain machines for a beverage company, and they use parts like IGUS and PBC all the time. The first slider I ever made was with free scrap parts.

If anyone needs any help with other ideas, just let me know! I could even help you build if need be.

Can't find any pricing, is it about the same as Igus' version?

I think it was like $25 for a 100mm slider and $50 for 1000mm rail, but don't quote me on it. I'll try and find the PO after the holiday. They're usually pretty good with their online quotes, I'd try that if you want something exact.

that's quite cheap?! I'll go contact them, thanks!

any luck getting hold of them?

I looked it up, the 100mm slider was $23.99, it's a little more for the 150mm or 200mm of course. I added the hand brake to mine which was $13.95. They have a lubrication wiper seal thing you can buy too, but I doubt any of you would need it for a camera slider.

The rail was $39.99 per meter and shipping was $14.99.

So the grand total for 2 pieces, the rail and slider with handbrake was $99.42 after tax and shipping.

It's a great deal! You can call their main number at 1-888-389-6266 or ask for a quote here:

Video from anyone with this slider? I checked out the PBC site. Looks very promising. I am surprised it is a lot cheaper than Igus. A friend wants me to make a slider for her. I may give this a shot...

DIY-slider, did you already get to use it?

I'm not an accomplished cinematographer like much of you, I'm really just a mechanical engineer. My friend is the video guy, but so far I've made 2 versions with this rail, and I've made 3 previous with IGUS.

They're both great, but this one is definitely the easier of the two. It's only two pieces, the slider and rail, plus you can buy it with the hand brake already attached.

Is it as smooth as the Igus rails?

It is just as smooth, if not smoother. I will say it's slightly louder than the IGUS rail because it's a Teflon surface instead of a plastic bearing. Although this kind you can lubricate with 3 in 1 oil, which you can't do with the IGUS. I started using this one for mechanical reasons since it's more precise. I don't think you could ever make this one bind, and if you do, you're probably doing something you should be! lol

Thanks for the info. I love the low profile look to this. Did you mount it to a support or will it support a camera when it's mounted to a tripod. Considering making a 36" version. Tryingto keep it light and portable.

Cheers!

I'm not sure what the load capacity is, but it is definitely more sturdy than the IGUS or Modular Guide rails. Depending on your camera setup and weight, for 900mm you should be fine with just a sturdy tripod. If you went with a 1200mm rail, and maybe a camera setup over 10 lbs, you might want to just use two tripods, one on each end?

For the most part, these are the numbers you would need depending on what you wanted.

Carriages with a hand brake:

100mm = UGA040C-0P1G10
150mm = UGA040C-1P1G10
200mm = UGA040C-2P1G10

Rails

900mm = UGA040R-0900-000
1000mm = UGA040R-1000-000
1200mm = UGA040R-1200-000
