Im a poor college student so i have about a $800 budget to spend on a new desktop that can handle Avid Pro Express 5.1. The desktop i was looking at is:

Hewlett-Packard Pavilion Desktop with AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor 3700+

specs:
AMD Athlon 64
2.2GHz
2000MHz
1GB
Serial ATA (7200 rpm)
200GB
ATI RADEON XPRESS 200
Up to 256MB (shared)

Other then a new graghic card i would think this could handle Avid. Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
.

I'm a stickler for Avid certified stuff. I guess I've just been burned. 64-bit processors are not gaurenteed to run Avid, and Nvidia cards work better. I also agree with dakota about another gig of RAM.

The Nvidia Quadro FX 500 is reasonably priced, but it's AGP. Not sure if that mobo is PCIe or not.

That's cool. I have no personal experience with 64 bit processors and Avid, so I'm just thinking of some horror stories that I've heard. I'll shut up now. :lipsrseal

Well... Working for me is no guarantee all 64s will work. Please do not count on my machine working meaning the above config will. My puter is self built heinz 57...

Avoid ATI with Avid. It's a mess with my Radeon 9600XT actually....If you have a chance to replace the video card by a GeForce 6660GT, it's the best suggestion I can give to you.

About the AMD processor, I actually run Avid with a Athlon XP 2600+ and the software work fine, but take a bit longer to render. I don't have the opportunity to test Avid on a 64 platform, but, you must remember that Avid is a 32 bits application and doesn't take any advantage of the 64 bits processing. (And actually, Avid doesn't plan to release a 64 bits edition of Xpress Pro).

If you plan to use Avid on a Windows XP X64, the "ONLY" interest to use Avid on that platform is you can use more than 2 gigs of ram (on 32bits system, the maximum amount of ram is 2 gigs due tot the 32 bits CPU registry).

Actually the limit is 4 gigs on windows xp pro 32 and 32 gigs on the Server 2003 Enterpise Edition. you can read all about it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/PAEmem.mspx

Also you would not benefit from larger memory adressing on Windows Xp Pro 64 because Avid would be running in the X86-32 side of the proccessor, if you take a look at the task manager on Win XP 64 bit, you will see the processes running in 32 bit mode, AVID is one of them, this mode is a good thing because it's not any slower and it allows for full backwards compatibility as it will for the 64bit editions of Vista.

Your only benefit in running AVID, Premiere or other similar apps on XP-PRO 64 is that the codebase of the operating system does not come from XP-PRO but from Server 2003, (looking at system dll's properties will verify what I'm saying) which is alot more stable as an OS, comes through many quality checks and is a little bit faster as a result from this...

Cheers.
