New demo reel

Good reel!
I especially liked your music video section. Although it looked cool, I don't know about the astronauts and space shuttle stuff, since you didn't shoot it yourself. But overall a good reel and good music.

Yes the astronauts and space shuttle stuff, wasn't mine (MD FILMS), But I had to use it (already burned out). We used it in a music video for the band currents, they bought it. However I did put some cool color correction on it. Thank you for the comment

I liked a lot of it (could lose the music portion at the beginning in my opinion), but good gravy man, why are you shooting interlaced?!

The music video part or the custom soundtrack portion?

If you're talking about the custom soundtrack part, I had to add this in for a client (they wanted to see it). Yea it's kinda boring, but it does create a build up though.

"why are you shooting interlaced?"

I'm not. If you mean the lines in the clip, I'm not sure why it's doing that, but it doesn't do that on my monitor. Weird!

Thank you for the comment!

"Pure sex. I would love to do a commercial for a high end car dealer like that."

They're not as fun as you think, but the pay is very good.

Thanks for the comment

The custom soundtrack part; I'd keep that separate....have a "sound reel" and a "video reel."

Confused by what you mean; are you saying the compressed clip on the site doesn't do that for you, or that the original footage doesn't, but the compressed does too? If the compressed does for you, then you probably outputted without the putting in the frames for the pulldown (pullup since you're outputting? I dunno excuse my brutalized techspeak). Either way, this is what I see:

I feel you on keeping them separate. For future reference, thanks for the input.

The original footage looks fine on my monitor, I not to sure what's going on. I'll have to look into it.

PS: Good job on the short!

"sorry, no I don't know Mike."

Well that's where the added in footage ( astronauts and space shuttle stuff) is from, MDFILMS. I think that you might be confusing this footage with someone else's.

"since you didn't shoot it yourself"

It's not who or where you get it from, it's what you do with it.

Nice Demo Reel, though I must agree, you really should lose the beginning portion, it's really not telling anyone anything - shooting skills for one, aren't shown by filming your bedroom computer, and two, your are using Garage Band, not that it's a bad program, but the whole point of Garage Band is anyone can do it, so why do I need a demo reel to hire someone to do Garage Band? I would really just cut it down to 2-3 quick insert shots of the waveforms and keyboard (don't need to show that shot twice in a matter of seconds, btw) just to show your diversity. But otherwise, you're losing people and that DVD might just get ejected after the first minute IMO.

Also I would lose the titles - they take up a lot of time on some parts and are just against a black background - again you may have one or two potential clients get a little bored - frankly I'd just keep your footage rolling with minimal or no titles - part of the mystique of the demo reel is the mystery behind the footage and what it really is and the situations behind it - plus we can obviously see the shots are from narratives and commercials so the titles are just killing time and redundant - and are blocking your beautiful shots.

Always keep in mind how narrow minded clients can be - they usually want to see videowork from you that is EXACTLY the type of video they are looking for - if someone is interested in doing a rap music video and you show them punk, they will be left hanging, if someone is looking for a documentary specialist and all you have is narrative then they maybe overly cautious in hiring you. If you don't have titles to what your pieces are - PEOPLE WILL NOT KNOW FOR SURE - WHICH IS A GOOD THING, because they will tend to be more open minded in that maybe a few of those shots that are really from a narrative, are from a documentary and they will stretch their imaginations to believe it may be from a documentary. Maybe those cool narrative scenes are from a rap music video and I see all I need to see to know I can hire this guy, or hey he has beautifully staged car shots - maybe that's from a high budget narrative, a client may think, and automatically have this enhanced and more diverse image in their head of who you really are and can be.

Not to sound pushy - really liked it, but have a guy I work for who tends to be pessimistic and time conscious when watching demo reels and I've seen how grumpy employers/clients can be watching them.

It was for a corporate company. Yea, I know GB is not really professional, but that's what the program is for. Us guys know that the program is not what we say "Professional", but they don't know that. It does require some skill to use though.

So you don't think that creates a build up? I was going to take it out but the client saw it already. I thought that it created a build up.

I'm not sure if you've worked with a corporate company (don't take this the wrong way), but most of them are idiots and you really have to make it idiot proof. They thought it was great, but you're right, I need to make it a little shorter. It's done!!

I really appreciate the feedback, thank you
