new computer, now can't capture

hey all...needing some advice. Got a new computer-rough specs are 2 GB memory, running XP, 1 TB HDD, 2GB processor, and Vegas pro for editing (although i'm COMPLETELY new to it). Capture with my old PC was flawless and easy. With my new PC, it seems that the camera isn't recognized when i plug it in. It "did" at first, but said that there was a problem with installation, and it might not work. Well, it doesn't...LOL. I'm in no hurry, but am wondering if anyone here has any advice as to why-? and possibly, a solution. thanks so much!

I assume you are connecting via firewire. If so, go to device manager via control panel and look for a category like "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controller". If you see a yellow exclamation icon, then you probably need to load a driver for your firewire card. Select the 1394 controller and click properties...on driver tab you will see an update drvier button.

On a side note, I strongly recommend you upgrade to Windows 7 when it releases in the near future. I'm running RTM now and it's a pleasureable experience (especially compared to Vista). The OEM driver model is seamless...the OS found proper drivers for all of my devices automatically with the exception of one (and the product isn't even released yet).

Cheers!

You might also want to rule out a serious problem that occurs when you plug in your camera into the computer hot. If you don't plug in the camera with the power off, you run the risk of destroying the firewire board in the camera. It has happened quite frequently.

Just a note on using older 1394 cards on new comptuers with Windows 7.

My older card (NEC chip) was working beautifully on Windows XP but camera could not capture from any program under Vista or Windows 7. ('Device offline' message)

The solution for me was to purchase Texas Instruments based card (TSB43AB22 chip). Now my Canon XH-A1 is happy with Premiere CS4 on Windows 7.
