New compressor without fcpx

The new programs are sold as separate apps, do you need fcpx to use the new compressor. Does it produce files compatible with older FCP, standard ProRes 422 for FCP6? Or ack even AIC?

My dilema is that my current old G5 workstation works perfectly fine for most of my needs, I'm comfortable with the workflow, and I'm too poor to upgrade anyway.

I need something new for general internet stuff and things that require intel processor. I'm thinking a mini would stack nicely and share a monitor, and I could use it for format conversions, h.264 output, and avchd import.

You can use the new version of Compressor without FCP. You can compress to any codec that's installed on your computer (although there will only be presets for a few codecs & workflows).

Why not MPEG StreamClip? (www.squared5.com)

It's free, and does pretty much all the conversion you'll need. I find that it is faster and more stable than Compressor, and is better for most (not all, but most) things.

I use MPEG StreamClip all the time, It'll probably be the first thing I install on a new machine, but doesn't it just use the codecs that are installed on the system. I use Final Cut 6, which won't install on a Lion based system. I'm on a really tight budget, which is why for now I'm thinking of getting a mini just to use as a little render box. I would assume that Compressor would come with a codec pack, or does it require FCPx to be there first. I assume ProRes isn't just on a new system, doesn't iMovie still render to AIC. Just mainly looking for the cheapest way to get the codecs.
