I have a Lumix LX5 in the mail. Friday I will be shooting footage. Nikon just announced a competitor. Looks very interesting. If it has manual control on video (The LX5 has this)...this will be a VERY FUN CAMERA for DVXUsers on the run. It's only 720P...but it is 24P. The lens is pretty amazing. 28-200mm F2.8-5.6. Pretty impressive. Time will tell....but ....I'm happy to see another hat in the ring in the "pro-grade" compact market. ~Please~ be manual control on the video!!

HHL - I will be very interested in your lx5 opinions. As far as I´m aware, no other compact is allowing manual controlled exposure and zoom during recording. I have my doubts as to whether the p7000 ( since Nikon dumbed down the d3100 ) will, and Canons g12, if it follows their g11/s90 formula, won´t either, since the s95 doesn´t. So it looks like the lx5 is the only such animal in the zoo today. If you could give us a mini-report with some footage showing brokeh that would be great. Look forward to it. thanx-k

ps- did you get the evf ?

interestingly enough, this just in - google translation of g12 announcement- g12 also 24fps !

Will be interesting to see how these things perform. I appreciate the fact that they still use ccd's, should mean no jello. From what I've seen the flip style compacts are essentially useless due to the cmos sensors. Close to 2/3" sensor is nice to. Could this be a preview of the small chip mirrorless slr?

Hey kurth

I have my LX5, and before I make any comments, I want to say that the EXPECTATIONS that a person has when approaching any camera are the foundation of their opinions.

With that first statement in mind, I would like to take another compact camera that is "best in class" and build the foundation for my opinion from there. I also have the FZ35. This is the "best in class" for the super zoom category. The similarity for it's classification and the compact camera category is similar. The bottom line for both (in the past) has been: Lots of cool functions, zooms a mile/very compact...but image quality just ISN'T there (for photos) compared to a DSLR camera. This is what I KNEW I was going to deal with/compare it to, so....that was the foundation of my opinion = my expectations ....going into buying/using this camera. (Before anyone brings it up) YES...we're talking about the successor to the LX3 here....the most significant compact camera...the exception to the rule as far as IQ goes. NOT DSLR quality...but as close as it gets from a compact camera...again..."best in class". (G10/11 users...I know, I know) OK. So those were my expectations BEFORE I bought the camera.

I haven't done an "artistic shoot" with it yet....but here's the quick version of my opinion so far: It surpassed my expectations in every way. It's smaller than I expected, (is it "pocketable" has been debated....I wear loose fitting pants I guess, because it fit *easily* in my PANTS pocket...the Jonas Brothers NOT LIKELY...but it wasn't a problem for me.) Better IQ than I expected. WOWSER....the photo quality is *AMAZING*...the color processing is NOTEABLE....I had heard about this....and KNEW IT WHEN I SAW IT....WOWSER. The video (the only part that anyone here cares about): I will post examples to demonstrate it. 30P...bummer...but it's LOW LIGHT ABILITY FREAKED ME OUT!!! I shot some STUPID LOW LIGHT stuff...put it on my 52 inch flat screen plasma (Panasonic)....and my jaw hit the floor. It was good FOR ANY CAMERA. (Get this)...I'll have to shoot comparisons and post results, but it SMOKED the GF1/GH1 both in low light. (NOW....this is the WEAKEST point of those two cameras...so, we won't carry on about it, but still...very impressive stuff). Its "auto mode" SHOCKED ME. The "flatness" of the image MUST BE TESTED AND REPORTED....I was blown away (for it's class, based on my given expectations).

I guess the easiest way to show how blown away I was by this camera is....I'll be selling my *hackable* GF1 because of this camera. PLEASE NOTE: IT IS NOT BETTER IQ!!! (other than low light...I'll post images and tests to validate)....but it fits MY needs better. Manual control video with an F2.0 24mm wide angle lens with low-light ability***IN MY POCKET***. WOWSER....that is amazing!

If it were 1080/24P....I would not hesitate to call it the DEFINITIVE entry-level film-maker camera. $500 with that specs and footprint would be *nearly* unbeatable in my mind. (****FOR a pocketable solution****)

I'll post footy when I can...I'm just buried right now....so it will be a this weekend, at the soonest.

ps...I will post results NOT in the Nikon area. :) If enough of us use it maybe we'll get our own little area in the Panasonic area. (I'm not holding my breath though...I may be one of the few who actually buy it and use it for "pocket cinematography") :)

pps....PLEASE do your research on this camera...because it does have it's WEAKNESSES. One noteable one is the LENS FLARING. It's TERRIBLE...but I knew to expect it...and I know how to fix it. So...like all cameras, it must suit your needs. :)

H- ....well, how do you feel today about the lx5, when you can get a gh2 w/14-42 for just twice the price ? What a camera for 1 grand , no ? It´s going to be a hard choice to now wait on my a33, and then drop another 250 on the gh2. The coolest thing they´re talking about is the digital zoom where c mounts could be used without vignetting . I´d love more than chocolate to be able to mount an angenieux 9.5-95 and record 1080/60, or my collection of canon fd.
Well I hope you´re happy still with the lx5 . When they can do a compact 1/1.6 sensor with a great evf, I´ll be interested. And that may happen at olympus soon, as shown at pk.
IMHO, it´s a cool year at photokina with alot of new cameras to want ! Including the x100 and a sony a77 model with a cool batterygrip. k
