new citizens music video: you drive

hi guys,
yeah it's a great clip, an open eye can see easily the quality of the cinematograpy. did you shoot the slow motion at the begining with dvx100a ? it looks like the 90.000 usd cam

some of the rain is composited, yeah. we shot over four nights - but it was only raining on two of them, so we had to match it up as well as we could.

that second shot of the walking was indeed done with the phantom.

for the first night, we had 4x 10k bigeyes, about 5x 9k maxibrutes, a bunch of babies and some 2k zips, with a 1000 amp generator. I got a little nervous watching them all steaming in the rain. the other nights, we had a bunch of 4x4 kinos and some babies.

Nice - did you have camera ops that came with the Phantoms? I would assume it would be kind of daunting just to pick up the camera and know how to get a good image outta it. It sure was for me when I rented a camera for a music vid that I never used before.

I'm assuming that footage that was shot out the window (of the scenery moving by) was shot with the DVX, man it really does stick out when you compare it to the phantom. Damn dude

Thats a nice lighting package. Good call going tungsten tho, I would have done the same, especially if its raining. Tell me about your digital and film camera package.

the phantom is actually digital, chayse. it's pretty wild, check out visionresearch.com. We thought about using film, but it would have added a lot of variables that I wasn't prepared for on such a difficult shot. so we had three of those and then one varicam.

we got a good deal on the phantoms, the operator was on his way to a missile test and stopped off in SF for the night. Everything else had to pretty much fit in around his schedule. Watching how he worked, I can say for sure that we would have been screwed if we'd tried to do it on our own.

the DVX does stand out a bit on some of the shots, yeah. originally we had planned to do almost everything in the phantom in that one night - and by 2am, no less - but at 5 we were still stood out in the rain, only half way through the shot list, after an incomplete grip & lighting package, engine trouble with the stunt car, slow downloads from the cameras, and so on, and so on. ah, the joy of making movies.

Beautiful work. I can understand your desire to make a video for that song. They compliment each other well.

Why are you guys not bumping this? It's an amazing video. One of the best I've seen posted on these forums... I just don't get it...

Oh well

BUMP

I liked this a whole lot...I dunno what to say ...really solid except i wasn't really feeling the song. The video fit it perfectly tho...awesome work

for what we were doing, the budget wasn't that big - $15k, which is what most stunt crews will charge just for the jump. we got really lucky.

funny, it's not going to be final until I have the tape in my hands and I can't make any more changes. this morning i woke up and was like ****, that singing shot still doesn't look like it's anything more than a car sitting on the pavement with the band in it. so I composited in a pack of cigarettes bouncing around the inside of the car in slo-mo. (it's not up yet, still trying to find a way to compress it better)
