New Canon Pro HD Camcorders Announced: XF300 & XF305

Nowhere near price competitive with the HPX170; you can get a new HPX170 including the free 16GB P2 card for $3995. And the HVX200A appears to be going for $3895.

As far as Canon MSRP vs. street price, according to B&H:
XLH1S: $8999, B&H $7599
XLH1A: $5999, B&H $5299
XHA1S: $3999, B&H $3395

So street price looks like it's about 12% to 15% less than MSRP.
Which means that the XF300 might street at around $5800.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but the price of the XF300 in B&H as of today is (4/25/10) is $6,799. So when should this price drop 12-15%? A couple of months after its release?

Stores will always have the MSRP as the price before the product starts shipping. Once it ships we can expect prices to fall within weeks.

The noise in the shadows was quite predictable from the effective pixel area:

Canon XF300, Canon A1, Sony FX1.

Wow - the sharpness is unbelievable! It does have more noise than the EX1 at 12 lux, but it clearly has considerably more detail.

Are you sure??? I don`t see more sharpness. What I see it`s more noise. For me this review it`s a bad sign for this XF300.

There's no question at the 1200 lux mark, but if you look at the green pointy leaves at the right corner at 12 lux, they do seem blurry in the EX1

This is what I saw. Certainly the noise is considerable, and doesn't bode well for the camera. But I'm still impressed with the level of detail.

The Ex1 is either out of focus or using heavy denoising. But they should be quite similar in resolution in good light.

Oh, and this one:

Come on - say what you will about the 12 lux noise, but you can't deny that the camera has incredibly impressive resolution

This may be true, because the EX1 does look unusually soft. However, if the ex1 is using heavy denoising, then the comparison is completely moot, and we're all right back where we started.

Personally I'm totally "in love" with this camera from specs to hardware. I'm dead set on being one of the first owners and I'm poised to be there. I'll pay the 7 to 8K if that's what it takes.

To offset that cost order a dozen B+W 82mm UV filters now! ... you'll make an absolute fortune flogging them on Ebay before Xmas.

Cheers.

some guys only look at specs and resolution. get over with it already...

1. codec codec codec. long gop mpeg2 is hard to edit and not very effective, especially if if you want to do some post processing. Ok, 50 mbits is enough for most situations, but it's still hardly editable and lags even on 8 core FCP machines.

2. sharpness? let's stop here for a moment. i'd say, the more sharpness - the more evident video look is. whats from the sharpness if you look at the image and then it looks like an HD demo disc on the tv, every silly viewers comes and 'wow, look at this', but is this film? sorry...

and again... 1080p, 720p? 99% of viewers DO NOT notice any difference if the material played on 50 inch screen from 11ft distance is 1080p or 720p, it's because there is really not much difference! i used to download 1080p movies to watch on my Panasonic Kuro, and then one time i didn't find the 1080p version and got 720p. well, from that time, i don't care, because it looks virtually the same.

EVEN with side by side comparison from a bluray, the difference is very subtle in specific areas.

Of course, there things to consider, like when you want to crop out something, etc... but i guess we don't shoot on red 4k (btw, i shot a few times on red short movies and geez... i try to avoid red at any costs, because post production is real pain!!!!) just to frame out half of the image. Why's cinematography there after all and DPs ?

3. NEW NEW NEW. New guys, or i should say less experienced guys always think 'this is new, it's the best, gotta get it'. i don't blame. i used to be that way, when i was shooting on XH A1 and then for the first time i saw DVCPRO HD and HPX500. Guess what. I bought it, because it was new, fabulous, fantastic, very good etc. So what then? i kept shooting same images, same style and i understood that it didn't change a thing, other than i had better codec (which was nice of course, as DVCPRO HD compared to 25 mbits mpeg2 was like jpeg compared to RAW then), 2/3 inch, sensivity, but... did my films get better? YES. WHY? Because i then understood that it all depends on me and started learning the craft itself and stopped worrying about technical things.

After all, the it's just really a technical thing if it's a bit sharper, or whatever. What i do before the production starts, what i do on the stage as a DP/director and what i can do with the light is what counts, not pixels.

Hell, now i could even take HV30 to a stage and work with it and it would give great results if you know it's limitations and know how to use it. So it's really important to step over the 'new' factor and finally get yourself to learn something and use what you have.

After all, i'm sure this is a great camera, but is it the best? probably not. there is 'best' camera, some are better for one task, some - for other tasks.

Sorry if i been harsh :)

:)

I think you need to get rid of ya PC! I can edit Mpeg-2 35mbs all day long in realtime on my "quite slow" core2duo PC with 3gig of RAM

This Codec is one of the easiest to work with natively- if you dont like this codec you will hate AVCHD!!

I think we all know content is king but this site is more about technical aspects not creative ones so dont get up tight when we go over the fine details indepth

i then understood that it all depends on me and started learning the craft itself and stopped worrying about technical things.

Why are you bothering explaining to us these "technical things"? If you are an expert on craft, shouldn't you be NOT complaining about codecs, Red, XH-A1? We don't need double standards in the website, one standard will do just fine.

Oh sorry, i'm not complaining :) i'm just merely saying that companies have to release new products which are new, always better than previous ones (kind of interesting, but the current one makes the previous one sound like they're now totaly not good for at all) and make lots of money out of it.

i guess all of us go through the stage where we need best and newest equipment, but in the end, it's not the camera on which something was shot matters... and i especially i like, when Canon takes world known cinematographers pay them money to use HDSLR and then people what what they do with it and start thinking (of course not understanding it) 'if i get the camera, i am as good as he is'. that's marketing.
