New Canon 6D 5DMK2 replacement?

BH photo video seems to have the most complete list of specs so far.

Not convinced this is really a 'replacement' for the mkII as many people report.

No CF card support, only 97% viewfinder accuracy, no headphone jack, plastic instead of glass covered LCD screen, etc...(What other parts have been made plastic to reduce cost-weight??)

Would like to see some good AB tests of uncompressed H.264 video...will there still be the 'soft' video ala the MKIII as a result of over zealous anti moire filtering?

Reportedly 1 stop extra dynamic range and better low noise, but again, would luv to see some decent comparison videos.
I don't need to shoot by moonlight much and a ML hacked MKII is still an incredible value for the same price. Just MHO.

Thoughts?

The 5DIII sharpens very well in post.

That is really a kick-a** stills camera. The video is still better all-around than most compettors.

But - I am still hoping for a Canon body tuned & with firmware for video. Probably not the 6D, but if it has beeter high ISO and clean HDMI, it might fit.

So far the 1DX is fantastic at video for people like me that require a great stills camera. Philip Bloom just put up a really nice music video August 14 that was all shot with just the 1DX, no rig or production crew to speak of.

I bought the 5DIII for stills when I needed the high ISO and auto focus.

The problem is that once I spent $3,000 to get the stills camera I needed, I don;t want to spend another $2,000 to $3,000 on a video camera. So still some life left in the DSLR franchise.

So for pro level quality stills - prefereably full frame - with good video, the list is short. I would rank them:

1DX
5DIII/D800

D600/6D - TBD

It was actually shot with both the 1dx (narrative) and the c300 (playing). The 1dx is pretty much the same as the 5dmarkIII except with more aliasing and that causes slightly more "apparent" sharpness.

Otherwise they are exactly the same. I call the differences placebo. But the 5dmarkIII is no slouch. I love mine. Very filmic images. Yes, soft but still better than many videocams a couple of years ago. Plus great codec that doesn't break apart when filming fast action or explosions. Oh yeah. Loving it. Aaaah.

The D800 took better stills but I felt at video it wasn't as good. For example the 720p mode is very usable in 5d mark III but with the D800 it was 7d like, as in almost unusable.

The only addition I was really looking for would be an articulating view screen to upgrade from my 60D to full frame. As well as a more efficient way to shoot, the view screen away from the camera helps overheating problems.

Looks like Canon's released another camera not for everybody. Built-In Wi-Fi and GPS Connectivity impresses some people, but I never needed them on a shoot yet.

I've been using a 5DII since it came out, and it's a real basic workhorse at a reasonable price.

I wonder if the 6D will drive the price of a 5DII up or down.

I think 6D is a replacement of 5D2 in the same sense that 50D replaced 40D.

And that 5D3 replaces (upgraded actually) 5D2 in the same way that 7D replaced (upgraded) 50D.

I think the 6D is simply a clever way for Canon to increase their profit margin for an entry level FF DSLR by only adding features that don't add much to per unit construction costs.

If you don't need GPS, enhanced AF, I still think a hacked 5D2 is a better investment. I may change my mind if tests prove the video quality is substantially better. Of course Canon is never going to improve the video quality in any sub $10,000 DSLR so as to not cannibalize sales of C100,300 1DX...unless of course Nikon seizes the opportunity first. Yes I lust for the 1DX, the Lamborghini of DSLR's, but can't justify the cost.
Personally i don't think the 5D3 is all that great a bargain, but that's just me.

WARNING: NEVER EVER shoot a MKIII over a fairly long period if you still firmly believe that there is negligible difference between MK III & II. Or else....

I think Canon has their work cut out for them...check out this test between the Black magic Cinema and the 5D3

Good test, 5Dmk3 doesn't fare so well:( although its NOT a fair test, comparing RAW to compressed footage.

The thing that surprised me most about the 6D is that they've actually done the opposite to this - at least with the sensor anyway. I half expected to see a rehashed mkII sensor, or even a mkIII sensor in the 6D, becuase that would make more sense from a production cost/margin basis.

I look forward to the many comparison tests as they become available.

Has anyone heard any updates about this camera?

Do we know if live monitoring will be available through the wifi to a smartphone (smartphone will be able to control the camera; what about video monitoring)?

Will the HDMI out be clean and suitable for external recording like the upcoming firmware for the 5DMk3?
