New Canon 550D T2i as B camera for 5DMKII?

I'm sure this answer is around right under my nose, but I can't seem to find it.

Will the new Canon T2i work as a B camera to the 5DMKII? Will they use the same lenses?

It would work great as a b-cam if it has comparable image quality to the 7D, but won't take the same lenses, so might not be really practical.

That is to say, they have different sized sensors so there will be a crop factor of about 2x between the field of view on the 5D to the 550D.

Any lens that you have for full frame (L Series or primes) will work on the t2i. The only lenses that won't work on a full frame camera are EF-S (Canon) or other "digital only" lenses from manufacturers like Tamron and Tokina (and not all Tamron or Tokina lenses are "digital only").

Lenses you use on the 5Dii will be about 1.6x "longer" when used on the t2i, that is, they have a narrower field of view because the sensor is smaller than full frame so some area of the image is projected around the outside of the sensor on the t2i. This effectively "crops" the image you capture by wasting some of the area of the image around the edge of the frame. Your 50mm which is a "normal" lens on full frame will be similar in use to an 80mm short portrait lens. 35mm is your normal lens with a 1.6 crop camera (APS-C sized sensor). The advantage of this is that lenses are usually less sharp at the edges and you end up throwing away that portion of the image, the disadvantage is that it makes it harder (more expensive) to get superwide with APS-C cameras. You can solve this by picking up a "digital only" Tokina 11-16 f2.8 lens for your wide shots with the t2i (or just do your wide shots with your 5dii).

If it holds up quality wise then I think it'll be a great B-camera. With there being uncertainty on whether the new 5dmk2 firmware will give 50/60P, if it doesn't this will do that job and give you a second camera, which all in isn't a bad function.

I've been collecting alternative prime lenses for my 5DMKII, so I'm happy to hear they'll fit the T21.

Thanks for the great answers, guys!
