Well after 5 months of saving every penny (I really did--at the end I had $300.00 in loose change) my brand new DVX100a should be here in a matter of hours!!!!!!
I seem to recall a posting on setting up a new camera but cannot seem to find it, anyone remember where that one is?
semja - an easy way to figure out what all those settings do is hook your camera to your television via the s-video or rca output so you have a live picture on your television. Then sit back, grab a Coke and using the remote that came with the camera go through the scene file settings one by one changing each. You can see in "real time" what each setting does to the image. (I suppose you could do with with the LCD but it would harder to see the relative changes.) As long as you don't save your settings (2nd to final choice on scene file settings) once you turn off your camera all the settings will revert to their previously saved (and in your case, default) values so you don't have to worry about screwing anything up. 8)
It mentioned black balancing the first time you use the camera.
After I read that post I filed it away in a foggy part of my brain called, 'something-important-I-need-to-do-when-I-eventually get-the-camera.'
But after reading the directions, no big deal, black balancing complete....
As for my first impressions...well...it has already completely blown away any expectations I had about this camera...
It is awesome.
I've spent like the last six months reading every post on this board and on 2-pop and to tell you the truth I was a little more than a little worried about spending so much money on a video camera. All that talk about strobiness this and HDV that...well all is now good...all fears are gone to rest.
It looks like FILM.
If you look through the view finder or the LCD the image is strobey but when you hook it up to the TV it's fine. All that strobiness talk is just plain crazy. To me movement looks just like movement shot with 16mm.
I have one question...
I have it in stretch mode right now and, like the directions say, the image gets squeezed a little. Is this how the image would appear with the anamorphic adapter on? Or would it be even more squeezed looking.
BTW the way thanks Jon and Rush at EVS for putting up with my bank craziness and my barrage of phone calls.

Squeeze Mode stretches the image the same proportions as the anamorphic adapter does. So using either method will result in the image in the viewfinder looking similarly squeezed.
