New camera on the way?

I want to buy the dvx100b before the rebate expires but is there a newer panny camera in a similar price range on the way?

It definitely seems as though panasonic wants to get rid of these cameras while they still can. The rebate ends just before NAB which is the perfect time to release a new camera. Is it just a coincidence? The rebate period must mean something right? I find it hard to believe that once the rebate period is over Panasonic is just going to go back to selling the same old camera at the same old price.

I dont want to buy this thing and see something better released a month later or a better rebate offered. I also dont want to wait and miss my opportunity for the rebate.

What would you do?

When the current one ends, my guess is that there will be another rebate or some kind of incentive. I've had mine for just less than a year and the rebate was either extended or a new one with similar incentives was given.

NAB is not too far off - If they do introduce a new camera, my guess is that we would still have to wait about 6 months before we can see it anyway, but who knows, maybe we'll be surprised.

There has been no indication of any new camera coming. I've been lobbying for an AVC-HD DVX, but was told here on the forum that no, not any time soon.

Panasonic appears to have no problem selling all the DVXs they can make, and there's still a very high appetite for them among broadcasters; cable networks like MTV and Turner use the DVX *all* the time. With that said, I think the Canon XHA1 is providing some stiff competition among the indie film crowd or those who need HD, so I've been saying the DVX could stand a price drop or something. But a replacement? Not likely any time soon, but then again, you never know.

As RokMartian said, even if there were a new announcement at NAB (which is almost two months away) there likely wouldn't be any new product on the shelves for another six months after that. The DVX was announced at NAB but didn't ship for another 6 months, the HVX was announced at NAB and didn't ship until 8 months later.

Any more, it seems like NAB really isn't a place to make announcements anymore. It's a place to see the products that have already been announced. The manufacturers all seem to have moved to a model of announcing products a month or so early, which lets conventioneers know whose booths they should plan to visit. The HD100 was announced a couple of months before NAB, the HVX was "teased" a month or two before NAB, etc. The only real exception so far has been Canon, which doesn't bother to announce products until they're almost ready to ship them, and I don't think they've ever announced a new camcorder at or in relation to NAB.

Do we think the HVX will ever get a tweak like the dvx (HVX-200a). I need to decide soon on a camera (upgrading). I can't cover the cost of all the storage options for the hvx and upgrade some other parts of my kit (tripod, audio and some led lighting).

I could make it to the hvx and shoot DV (worried about the p2 not showing up in time before first project) or pick up a used 100b and upgrade the rest of my kit and wait 6 months and see what is next (I have a 100 with lots of hours). I am more concerned about 16x9 than HD. I have two documentary projects in Honduras and India in development.

Any thoughts Barry?

Ever? Ever's a long time, so sure, someday there'll be a revised model, that's almost a given. But would it happen soon? That's the question. And all indications are that no, there's no new model coming; I've asked repeatedly at trade shows and whatnot and they always say "nope, HVX200 is current and will remain current." Keep in mind that it can be updated via downloadable firmware updates, and it makes sense that the existing model would stay current for longer than the DVX did.

There have been numerous rebates continuously for the past year. The rebate is just a way to compete on price with some of the low-cost HD competition without actually reducing the MSRP. When the current rebate expires, it is highly unlikely that it will go back to the straight MSRP with no rebate. Something else will come along. They might have a larger rebate or a smaller one, they have done both in the past year.
